Skip the mixing. I found some left over that I didn't use from my last water change.
IO kit read 3.75meq and the salifert read 10.5meq so I guess that answers that question!! The IO kit is probobly over a year old and still relatively accurate - I'm impressed.
Geez, I never thought to test the accuracy of my kits against newly mixed water. Great idea! The only info I have regading composition of newly mixed water is an informal bit of info I received from Fosters and Smith. Does anyone know of any sites where IO posts any guaranteed analysis information of their reef crystals salt???
OK after several days of documenting the ORP and pH here is what I've come up with. Unfortunatly my findings have not answered any of my questions.
My fuge is lit 24/7 to maximize nurtrient uptake and my light cycle in my main tank is from 0930AM to 1000 PM
ORP is monitored with the monitor from the RED SEA ozonizer and the pH is monitored with a pin point monitor freshly calibrated.
10/15/07 Ozone at 175mg/hr
9 PM ORP 268 pH 8.3
10/16/07
4AM ORP 379 pH 8.18
7AM ORP 377 pH 8.07
5PM ORP 246 pH 8.15
8PM ORP 261 pH 8.25 KALK drip started for CA of 390 (1/4 tsp in one gal to drip overnight)
10PM ORP 288 pH 8.3
10/17/07
7AM ORP 381 pH 8.27
5PM ORP 284 pH 8.39
7:30PM ORP 288 pH 8.4 (ozone increased to 220mg/hr)
10:30PM ORP 288 pH 8.4 (1/8 tsp kalk drip started to further increase CA level)
10/18/07
6:50AM ORP 381 pH 8.36
5PM ORP 258 pH 8.4
Since the ORP didn't resond to the increase in ozone (in fact it decreased even further throughout the light period) I decreased the ozone to 75mg/hr to see what would happen.
9PM ORP 241 pH 8.45
10/19/07
8AM ORP 321 pH 8.37
ORP cannot get to 380 even at night with an ozone output of 75mg/hr so I increase to 150mg/hr.
10AM ORP 318 pH 8.33
Covered probe with a cup to see if the light intensity was interfering with the probe/monitors performance and giving inaccurate results. I placed multiple small holes in the cup to allow sufficient flow but kept the probe covered enough to block the light.
9PM ORP 244 pH 8.3
midnight ORP 254 pH 8.27
From these findings here is what I can conclude:
1) I have a significant change in pH throughout the light dark cycle which I will correct utilizing a kalk drip each night instead of just randomly.
2) the ORP didn't seem to be directly related to the pH. When the kalk drip was started it kept the pH from dropping yet the ORP continued to consistently climb to the 370's each night.
3) I realize I made multiple changes to the ozone output in a very short period. Please know that with the ozone output running between 150 and 220, the ORP consistently climbs to 380 each night and when the lights come on it plummits to 250-260 within 2-3 hrs.
4) I consistenly have a drop in ORP of at least 100mv during the light cycle.
When it comes down to it, here is what I'm concerned about:
1) is an ORP of 250 during the day and 380 during the night bad??
2) Would my tank be healthier if I could keep the ORP around 380 during the day??
3) If I cannot keep the ORP up during the day with an ozone output of 220 mg/hr what else can I do to raise the ORP??
4) I completely understand that ORP is an incredibly complicated topic; but I'm thinking if someone else is able to keep the ORP in their tank at 380 during the day then why can't I? What am I doing wrong or what could I do better??
Just want the best for my beloved tank!!!!! Please help me understand and guide me in the right direction.
Probe is less than a month old. Essentially the same readings have been confirmed with two different probes/monitors because I initially started with a 100mg/hr ozonizer and had these significant drops in ORP during the day so I upgraded to a 200mg/hr ozonizer and got the same readings.
Well, if the tank is doing well enough, I guess I wouldn't worry, but that's a very large ORP change. I'd be careful about dosing more ozone. The measurement might somehow be wrong or something else might be happening.
Since I posted that thread I've made some major improvments and upgraded skimmer and water flow significantly. I'll post an update to that thread tomorrow with all the changes I've made.
Continuing to have loss of coloration and polyp extension after all the work and money I've put in over the last few months so the ORP changes are what I was hoping to work on next in an attempt to fix the original problem.
