I got an email special from the guy (West Mariculture on eBay) I purchased my DSB from. He's selling 50 pounds of cured Caribbean live rock for
$110.00 with FREE SHIPPING (ground). From the looks of the pics it doesn't look too bad for the price. He said he would knock off $5 a box for an order of 250# or more so if anyone is interested I'm planning to get at least 50# myself, email me and I can forward the pics and info to you.

I would but the pics are imbedded with the email and also are too large for the RC gallery. I'd be happy to forward the email to you.

Is this open to anyone? If you could post pics here or email me at jtesdall@mapcon.com that would be great. Thanks for telling.

By the way, what kind of deal did he have on your DSB. I just ordered 80 lbs of Aragonite for a 55 from DRSF&S but I will be setting up a 90 (as Ryan mentioned in a post last night) in the near future.

ZLTFUL, here is your rock deal. If you don't want 50 pounds I will split it with you. I live north of Des Moines and work in Clive.

Here are the pics of the rock:

I may order a box next week.

It is sure hard to beat Dr Fosters and Smith price on Aragonite sand. Thanks for the link. I just ordered 80# of Carib Sea for $64 + $11 S/H. I could have added another bag without raising the shipping (I think) they tell you when you checkout how much more $'s you can add without raising shipping. That would have been $107 for 120# shipped. Your deal is still a bit better though. I just wasn't sure if it was aragonite?? or if it matters.

Thanks again for the lead Brian!

I would definitely be interested in this possibly. I am going to go over it with the better half and we will go from there. I will let you know.

Hey Joel, you made me start thinking about the sand I purchased so I emailed him this morning and he replyed that although the sand is not considered aragonite it is calcium based??.

OK, so we have talked and will most likely going for a full 50 lbs...that would make ~60lbs in our 47 gallon tank...

The questions I have are, how is it shipped? Does it remain alive once you recieve it if shipped dry? I hope it isn't shipped dry but then I know little about all of this...

When we recieve it, should we have some buckets of saltwater mixed up and aerated so that we can toss it in those and then plan on adding a little at a time?

Like I said previously, I am new to this so every little bit helps.

TIA

Ryan

They will ship it wet, probably with paper towels or something similar. It won't be dry.

Adding a little at a time is a good idea. Although I don't know if it is necessary. What do others think?

I don't think you really should add it directly to a display tank all at once. It is going to be shipped from its origin somewhere in the Carribbean and the be shipped onto us, there is definitely going to be dieoff of oragnisims on the rock. If this is put right into your tank already stocked with fish/corals it will probably cause a huge ammonia spike(bad). Take a look at this article it has a good desciption of the process of "curing" the rock:

I Got Mine!

I Got Mine!

I received my first box of Rock. I plan on ordering another. Quite a bit of die off so I wouldn't recommend putting in an established aquarium until it has been washed well. I put it in a new tank, but I still rinsed with salt water very well. You just can't beat this price, 50lbs $110 shipped! Here are some pics.

Yes, that is true. Hopefully there is other good life on it. I am not sure what to check for. I need to watch it carefully for life. I haven't yet.

I dont think it really matters how much life is on it. As long as there are some pods and sponges for the fish to feed on.

Hey, JTesdall...

How would you rank the quality? Better/worse than say Adam's or Iowa Seascapes?

Let me know.

Thanks!

Also, if anyone else has ordered from this particular vendor, what are their opinions?

It is not as good, it doesn't have any coraline growth and had a bunch of die off. At this point I wouldn't recommend it for an existing tank unless you added a little at a time. I am starting a new tank so I have to wait and let it cycle anyway.

Still, it is decent rock and for the price I would order more. But I want to see how long it takes my tank to cycle. Right now the Ammonia and Nitrite are very high.
