LR, Hair algae cycle??

I just got 71 lbs LR and it has very very very little hair algea. Like you have to concentrate to see it. If I used it in my tank during cycle without any lights for about 2-3 weeks, would it go away? Or still be an issue?

Or can I use it in my tank for a week to get the bacteria into my sand some, and help control the sandstorm when I startup.

i don't think it will be an issue. just try removing it before you put the rock in your tank. i would keep the lights on if you want to keep your coralline.

there is a new product out that works extremely well on hair algae as well as other nusiance algaes. it is called marine S.A.T. and what it contains micro-organisms that just go to town on algae. the good thing about it is that it will not eat your benificial refuge algaes. both myself and a buddy of mine, he of which has been fighting HA for the last 6 months have compeltely ridded our tanks of nusiance algae, hair, cyano, and bubble. id give this a shot it will work... just be sure to find the underlying cause of the algae problem, as you dont want to have it keep coming back.

Jasonj90,

may I ask where you get Marine S.A.T. And who makes it. I have been fighting this for a good year. And I have tried everything thats been suggested.

Thank you.

Westlake Ohio
Stuffs expensive and you need to use it for a few weeks.
Might want to buy a gallon.
Paid $20 for 12oz bottle, just enough to do 120g for one treatment.

Have you tried cooking rocks?

Cooking the rocks is my last resort because I don't have room for a sump and I only have the live rock and a small canister filter for the bioload in the tank. I am afraid to pull the rock and not be able to keep my tank stable with just water changes. I have a seahorse and they really don't like stress.

I didn't trust my test kits so I have had 2 differant LFS and a friend test it for me. There are no detectable Phoshate or nitrates. One store used salifert tests. So I can't figure out whats going on. I know the amount of Algae I have consumes these as fast as they get in the water. But I only use RO/DI water and I test it with a TDS meter.
I may pull half the rocks at a time.

I don't believe hair algae behaves like parasites, the spores can be dormant in the rocks for years, and when the condition is ripe, they will start germinating again, and spread themselves all over the tank. Cooking rocks only get rid of some of the unwanted hitchhikers. Anyway, corals and fish you buy might carry the spores too, there is no way you can prevent them enter your tank.
