LTA question re rock

My LTA NEVER sticks to rock. It will stick to glass and my hand and overflow and just about everything else, but never ever onto live rock. I understand they're a sand-dwelling nem, but where do they attach in the wild? Just onto sand?

I have four in my tank. All are attached to rocks. Go figure!

They attach to hard coral base beneath sand. They are not happy unless their columns are completely covered with sand.
