Lugol's Solution

I'm confused about this product. Is it just to be used as a dip for corals? and if so, do I rinse it afterward? Or do I add it to my tank weekly to help with growth of the corals? and if so, how much do I add? and if so, do I add more because of water changes?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Cindy

Me too... I got some Iodine stuff from Stan at the last meeting, and was wondering if I could just use that. Good ??? and am following.

Cindy and Bill-
Lugol's Solution is a very high concentrate of iodine. It can be used as a weekly iodine supplement and/OR as a coral dip. I think you only add like 1 drop/25g/week. Its very strong stuff. It is really good for soft corals. Probably the highest quality source of iodine for the aquarium.

Thanks for the info.

How long do I have to dip my corals? and should I rinse them off before putting them in my tank? Also, how do I acclimate them with my tanks water? I'm sorry to seem so stupid, I've never been told how to do this and I don't want to do something wrong and kill them.

Thanks.
Cindy

No problem. You never want to leave a coral in any dip longer than 5 min 10 min tops. Just get a bowl (1 gallon) of tank water and then add 40 drops of Lugol's and let the coral stew for 5-10mni. You can use a turkey baster and blas it a few times too. The coral can be put right into the tank from there, no extra rinsing needed.

To acclimate a coral to your tank is very easy. Unlike fish corals don't have a nervous system so they don't need the super slow acclimation that fish need. Just float the bag in your tank/sump for about 20 minutes to match temp. then I usually add 1 cup of tank water to the bag even though it's not needed, then you can do your dip and into the tank.

I can't comment on the Lugol's as I haven't been able to find any reliable info ( though I use it as a dip anyways ) but acclimation has little to do with the nervous system.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot to ask.. Do I add it to the tank every week?

Cindy
Yep 1 drop per 25gallons per week.

Some corals you leave in dips for a hour or more. I've dipped corals for 2 hours to kill monti nudis. Most parasites take longer then 5-10 minutes to be affected. Some parasites just get stunned from the dip and you need to use a turkey baster to get them off the corals. Research what method of dipping your going to do before doing it.

Not sure where the one drop per 25 gal rule came from either???

Not sure what dips you are using that you leave them in that long... I use Revive and I used to use Logols and 5-10min was right on the directions... never had an issue with it not killing a pest in that time frame. I have always heard that a general rule is 5-10min as well.

And 1 drop per 25 gallons per week of Lugols comes straight from the directions.

Should the gal. of water with the 40 drops be thrown out afterward? if so, where do I dispose of it? and if it doesn't have to be thrown out, how long does it keep and still have it's effectiveness?
Cindy

I would test the waters iodine level before adding any more. Dose enough to adjust your level to nsw levels. Adding to much iodine can cause algae issues.

The stuff I used to kill monti nudis I got from greg at Aquatic tech. It was just one raw chemical, no brand name to it. It was purple. I usually leave corals in for 15-30 minutes when I use the tropic marin dip. Never lost a coral doing so. I don't use Lugol's as a dip, just as a additive when I ran the nonphoto soft coral tank.
