Lukinrats Old and New 90 Gallon Tank!

THE OLD 90

Well I am relatively new to RC, but I have been on here everyday since sometime in April 2007... I am from Laurel, Ms which is about 60 miles north of the Gulf Coast of Mexico... I have had a saltwater tank since around '02 or '03 (hard to remember)... My first tank was a 55 gallon fish only that I got from my father in law... He had started the tank sometime around '01, and I helped him along the way... He realized that I loved it, and always called me over to help him on maintenance, and to ask me questions since he knew I had been reading much more than he had... later that year he had an Aortic Aneurism (? spelling) , and had bypasses, and a valve repair... needless to say, he could not take care of the thing anymore, and I assumed full responsibility of it... So that year when X-mas came around, he gave me everything he had accumulated... I took care of it in it's new home for another year or so, until the next X-mas... My wife and I were in the LFS buying some stuff, and she saw a 90 gallon that she just loved... so that was my X-mas present... This was for X-mas 2004, and I went and picked it up right after New Year's '05... My plan was to start a reef tank with it. -------------------->

I had been reading for some 2 years or so about keeping a reef tank, and considered myself a real amature... Keep in mind that I thought I was an amature even before I had any experience keeping a reef whatsoever, but still I had absorbed quite a bit of knowledge on the subject... So anyway, I set up the tank, and transferred the 55 into it... I had purchased a minimal amount of Fiji live rock (which I still hate to this day) when I picked up the new 90G... If I remember right my wife was having some company over a few days after it was all transferred from the 55 to the 90, so she wanted it to look good... I complied and this is what it looked like at that point (early 2005)

153114tank.jpg

So there it is!!! My new 90 gallon great hope... Notice that I had some huge damsels in there... they were in the 55 and I had to transfer them so that they did not die... Also you see the few pieces of dreadful Fiji Live Rock... the rest of it was just dead rock that came out of the 55 FO... the anemones were put in there to make it look PRETTY, as my wife requested... they did very well for a while (soon you will know why they did not do well)... Also I had decided that I could not fit a sump, so I put 3 Fluval 404 canister filters w/ only carbon in them, and 2 Aquaclear power heads... This was to be my circulation, and to be honest it would have been sufficient for the corals that I planned to keep, although the power heads were ugly... So the company my wife was having came, and then the planned live rock order took place... I knew that I would need time to get the rock in there, and that it would probably be a mess, so I waited till no one was coming over... I caught the damsels and took them to the LFS for credit (the one pictured on the far right is still there today in the 300 gallon just as you walk in the door)... I ordered live rock from TBS... It arrived the next day, and I put it in... I was very pleased with it, and here is a picture of the tank at that point

153114Tank_2.jpg

So I had it set up, and had even put a few corals in there... I thought it was coming along nicely, and wanted to give it some time to establish, and grow corraline, etc... so I just left it alone except for maintenance, and watched as it just turned into a beautiful tank... THIS MAY BE BORING MOST OF YOU, BUT STAY WITH ME

THEN DISASTER STRUCK... I STRESS THE WORD DISASTER

HURRICANE KATRINA

I know what some people may think when I say this was a disaster for the tank... How was it a disaster for you? You dont live on the coast or New Orleans... Just to give you an example of the devistation... There were 180 something counties in MS affected by Katrina... Obviously the top 3 were coastal counties, but at #4 was Jones County, MS... This is the county that we live in... When the Cane got to Laurel it was still a category 3 w/ 120 mile per hour winds... It absolutely was the worst thing I had ever seen in my life (29 years at the time)... We were without power for a total of 20 days... I purchased an 8000 watt generator when I realized the thing was going to hit the coast as a CAT 5... Even though it was a pretty good generator... I could only run the tank maybe 2 hours a day, and I tried to keep a heater running when needed... So the power came back on, and so did the tank... I was happy that I had only lost a shrimp, and 1 wrasse... I thought (this is great), but over time the thing just sort of got worse and worse... all the corraline slowly went away and my GSP faded also.

I know this post is getting really long, so here we are today... We have gotten back to a normal life... the tank also had to survive a move... We moved into a new house in Jan of this year... I set it up and have pretty much only maintained it as we have been getting everything else in order... I just put the rocks in there until I can get to them and aquascape... So here is a current picture of it, and then I will end this post.

SO THE TITLE OF THE THREAD IS LUKINRATS OLD AND NEW 90... THIS CONCLUDES THE OLD PART, AND ALL POST FROM HERE FORWARD WILL BE THE NEW 90, AND ALL MY PLANS ETC. WHILE I FINALLY BUILD MY REEF... I HOPE TO MAKE A RECORD OF IT, AND GET SOME HELP FROM ALL THE WONDERFUL KNOWLEDGE HERE ON RC

LATER :)

THE NEW 90

While sitting at work one day, and thinking what I should do about starting my reef again :) ... I decided the first thing I needed was a Sump... I quickly ended up at Melev's site... What a great place!!! I really learned a lot about all kinds of things not even related to sumps, and it even led me to Reef Central.

The first thing I did was sponsor RC, and then started studying... while I was trying to decide what to go with for a sump, I realized that I would need to pick out a skimmer, and then design a sump... This is when I first turned to the RC members for info... I started a thread to hopefully help me make an informed decision... I had been reading for a week or more, and had yet to find anything very useful... The information on RC about skimmers is abundant, but spread out... I wanted info on all skimmers, and I wanted it all in one thread... This helped me out tremendously, and I think it is a good one for anyone who might be in the market for a new skimmer... Also I would look Here to see how some people think they stack up

Now I have decided on a skimmer, and when I finally get it... Everybody will see whether or not my threads actually helped me.

The next thing that I did to get the ball rolling was to order an Ro/Di filter... I had always used distilled water from Wal-Mart... So I decided to finally bite the bullet... So far I am very very happy with it... I purchased mine on Melev's site

Currently I am planning my sump out... Melev has been a tremendous help to me when I ask him for advice, and I know that I am probably a PIHA, but he is really a great guy... So he does not let me know it if I am.

Here are a couple of pictures of the stand to show what I have to work with... Keep in mind that behind the wall the tank is on... is the kitchen, and I have not basement... Everything has to be contained right in the stand, or on the back of the tank

Stand

Stand w/ doors open
153114stand_open.JPG

So right now I have decided this much... I am going to do away with the drawers... I plan on just taking the face off of them, and glueing them to the top of the doors... Then I will remove the trim in between the top of the door, and bottom of the drawer facings... this will give me an extra 5-6" of height when accessing the sump

One last picture to show what my plans are currently for the design.

153114sump.jpg

Now I hope that all of this makes sense... I am trying to give everyone a pretty good understanding of what I am going to be working with...Also I want to be able to come to this thread when I start on the sump, so I will know what I wanted to do.

So for now I will leave it to you guys to make any suggestions... I have some more things to show... I also have some more ideas about how I want to do things, but that will have to wait till I get home... I dont have any pictures for representation right now

Just so everyone knows... Melev has become my Reef Mentor... I don't think he knows, so shhhhhhhhhh!

This is also something that I want to do after I get my sump installed... Although it will be on a little bit larger scale because I want more flow than what a couple of maxi jets put out... I want to put like a mag or something in that little box... with a oceans motions on top of it... this will lift the pump up almost to the top of the display, allowing there to be minimal plumbing up to the manifold... I have not decided yet, but I may not even have to put a prime line used to start it up for the first time... I would only put a short suction down in the display.

Whada yall think?

I think this is a pretty good representation of how my skimmer will be built... After all of the information that I got from RC users on my thread, I decided to go with an ORCA Custom skimmer... #1 I could not decide on one because there were several that had features I was looking for... #2 I talked to Sean over at ORCA and he is very very helpful... #3 because DAS only makes a dual recirculation skimmer that is 30" tall, and the max I can accomodate is like 26.5"... So when I finally decided what all I wanted I called Sean to make sure it would work out... What we decided at the time was the following:

-6" Reaction chamber
-3.5" neck
-25" tall
-2-aquabee needle wheel pumps mounted deltec style (1 on each side)
-1" outlet plumbing w/ gate valve
-venturi lines plumbed into collection cup
-john guest fitting on collection cup for drain

Note: ( I think there maybe more room in the sump than originally planned, so I may change the size of the body, but I am not sure yet)

Although I have no idea what the final product will look like... I believe it will be similar to the picture above... Only it will have 2 pumps, and maybe some other small differences... I might add that the difference in cost in nothing substantial... So if after reading all the threads on RC, including mine, You cant decide on one... The custom route through ORCA might be the best option I have found

I wanted to include this information in this thread so that all the people that helped toward my choice would know what I decided on... I will def. put pictures, etc. up after I get so that the other people that were reading my threads to obtain info for the same reason as me, can see what direction it pointed me in... I feel like everyone would be mad if I did not share my decisions

Anyway just some more ramblings about my progress

Glad to see you got things back together after Katrina. I had 8 feet of water in my house, lost a 30 gallon saltwater tank. Nice pics and setup. Good luck.

I think it is commendable that you paid for Premium Membership right off the bat. I see people that have been here for years that choose not to and even argue that they shouldn't have to.

I'm not posting this to start a debate. I just think you made a good choice, that's all.

Thanks! I just think it is great that you CAN come here and get all the info you would need for free, and not even be forced to pay a dime to participate... There are so many places on the web that would require payment for things like this... When I run accross somewhere that does not, I respect it!

I am just glad that enough people do sponsor RC that it is able to be this great!

Man... I swear I don't know about this hobby sometimes!! JK!! Not more than 2 weeks ago, I tested all my Param's... I did it more than once, and I did it with new test kits I had just gotten, and my old ones... I also got a new Power Compact fixture recently, like the middle of April... HMMM!

So for about the past week, or so, I have noticed some strange algae growth (the stuff that you saw the picture of Marc)... Then a few days later the hair algae started, and I mean took off... I have been mowing in there ever since, with my fingers... I didnt think it would be nitrates because of the tests I had just done... I might add that my tank may be considered as a new system of sorts... I moved it in January into my new home, but it was established before that... I got home this afternoon and have been worrying with it up until just now... Last night I added some Right Now!! I just figured that it was going trough a cycle, and could use some help

Just for the hell of it, I tested both phosphates, and Nitrates... I figured it would be the PO4, but to my surprise Nitrates= 40-50
The Right Now said to turn off the skimmer for 24 hours, so I did... I turned it on again a while ago, and it went absolutely crazy... The only thing I can figure is that it was cleaning something out... The foam was not funky or nothing, but it was so much of it... It was like I put soap in the thing to clean it out... It has settled down now... I also added the sizzling carbon that they sell with the right now just then, so I guess I will check nitrates again tomorrow, and see... The stuff I have heard about the right now is good where I have been able to find it... It claims to establish a cycle in 24 hours, so if this is true, it should be functioning startin now... I would have never tried it, but the guy at the LFS said they started using it in all their tanks, and have been impressed

Hopefully when I get a fuge going, I wont have this problem
Anyway, I just thought I would share, and see if anyone had any suggestions

Oh.. BTW... I did a 35 gallon change monday, and I am going to do another large one Sunday

Later:confused:

Finally!!! I get to update my thread a little bit here... In my last post I mentioned that I was having a hair algae outbreak that I attributed to high nitrates... I have been doing what I should ever since to get rid of it, and I WAS SUCCESFUL... I was going out of town a couple of weeks ago, so I decided to mix up a bunch of water... I then took half of that water, pulled all my rocks out, and then scrubbed them one at a time in the laundry room sink... Each time I grabbed a new rock to scrub w/ a toothbrush, I put fresh water in the sink... I scrubbed all the HA off of them, and also rinsed them really good of detritus... I also had a couple of 5 gallon buckets filled with water beside me... I took each rock then and dipped them in each bucket, and then they went back into the tank... After I got done with all of this (BTW, this only took about 30 minutes total, and I only wasted about 30 gallons of water) I then did a large water change of 40 - 50%... Then I went on vacation... All of this took place about 2 weeks ago, and I am glad to say that, the HA is gone, and nitrates are under control... Coralline is taking off now also, probably a direct result of removeing the competing algae, and removing all the nitrates, and phosphates... This is what I like to believe anyway

Later,

Now the fun part

Now the fun part

I can't believe it, I finally get to put up a few pictures of FRAGS... I have never had a Frag before, and this is what I have been working towards

First lets start off with a full tank shot... I busted one of my 10k bulbs the other night cleaning it, but it still looks better than it ever has... See what you think

Here is a shroom, I got it at the LFS, and I think it is a candy cane, or peppermint... Something like that

I have had this mushroom, since before Katrina... They used to be pretty HUGE, but this was one of the itty bitty heads that made it... It is just now getting to be a good size... If you know the name, let me know

Picked up some new stuff tonight @ the LFS... Something I usually do not do, but he had some things I wanted... When I got home, my in laws were here... My father in law was showing me his new camera, which is a Sony DSLR A 100... Whatever that is???? It is a digital 10 mega pixel with a large zoom on it... I decided to try it out on my new stuff, and post some pictures... The pictures that I took are GREAT stuff... I walked over to my laptop to slap in the card, and what did I find? Compact Flash card... Damn!!! I have not seen one of those in a while... Oh well

My purchases were:

Fish
#1- Tiny Clown Goby
#2- Lawnmower Blenny
#3- False Lemon Peel Angel
**All of which are in QT**

Corals
#1- Bubble Coral
#2- Green Flower Pot

And last, but not least, a Large Saddle Carpet Anemone

I fed the fish , and they all had a bite, also the Anemone just had a large chunk of crab meat... Devoured it

Later,

Congrats on getting back into things after that storm, we in florida sypathize. I was in Gulfport Ms for katrina in the parking garage at the Hancock Bank Building. It was one of the worst storms i've been through. I chase hurricanes for a NFP research company, having just been back there a couple months ago i was shocked to see how bad things still are for so many people there still, and the coast may never look the same. Only Charley rivaled the damage and intensity of that storm since ive been chasing.

Here are some pictures of the new additions that I mentioned in the last post... I could not find the blenny, and goby right now, but I know they are fine... I just saw them both a couple of hours ago

Here is my favorite, but does not look as good as I think it should right now What may be wrong with it, or is it fine, and I am just wigging
IMGA0401.jpg

Also, this is great, but may not be up to snuff, or I am just picky

Saddle Carpet Anemone... I love this huge thing, and I was hoping one of my clowns would get in it, but sadly this has not happened

Thanks for letting me share

What type of lighting do you have? And you should keep an eye on the blenny and goby. If they get in that carpet, they are a gonner. They are extremely notorius for eating fish, crabs, snails and anything else.

Ya... I appreciate the info on the carpet... I have been having this discussion in another thread... I guess I am just going to keep an eye on it... I have been feeding it a lot, and hope that will keep it in check, but if it ends up eating a fish, it is a gonner

later,

Ok.. So here is an update... I had a small incident a week or so ago where I lost a few fish... I was inclined @ first to blame it on the Anemone, but I ended up figuring that I probably needed to blame it on myself... I think one of two things could have happened
#1-- installed a Koralia 4 to blow behind my rock work, and keep that from being a dead spot, and it stirred up the sustrate in one spot... This could have caused some sort of biological meltdown that some of the fish could not handle

#2-- I installed a total of 4 new Koralia powerheads in my tank... three- #1's for circulating the water column around in the front, and the 1 #4 behind the rock work... I rinsed them off, but did not give them a really good bath... So I could have released some kind of chemicals that some of the fish could not handle

While I have no idea what really happened, I know it must have been some bad *#$&#^, because 2 of the fish that died had been through some rough stuff, and had proven to be very hardy... Anyway all the details are here if you want to read about it
