Lux meter

There is a specific way to change lux to PAR, but it's a little complicated. I'll see if I can dig up a link...

But otherwise, I would buy a lux meter to make sure that my light output matches my LFS's output over their tanks. Just incase, because my corals don't like to be fried!

Lux is output seen by eyes and it heavy on the green.
PAR is useful light for photosynthesis. Any formula is a guess since it depends on the proportion of the different wavelengths involved. But LUX is better than nothing.

Do you own a LUX meter, PAR meter, or a multi meter? You can get a PAR sensor for about $150 and hook it up to a standard multimeter use a conversion and voila PAR numbers.

Then IMHO the best bet is to measure LUX and use your eyes to determine if the spectrum is the same or close. Even a PAR meter is not perfect since you could measure a red light and adjust a blue light to have the same PAR. Same PAR, but the coral will be happier and blue and algae under red.

Sorry I don't have a better answer for you. Maybe someone else will have a better idea.
