Why can't you just move your light rack over?

because of the way i wired everything into the Apex. I suppose I could break all that down too, but I'd rather not. I have these 2 strip lights that I may just use. I'm hoping to only have the corals away from the good light for a few days max. Really just until I can catch the fish and move them to QT. I'm thinking the corals can handle low light for a few days. would be like a week of storms in the wild or something.

You're correct they should be fine with no light for a (couple) day's. Personaly i wouldn't want to go a full week with out. Good luck hope you can rid you self of the ick.

Will you be going with hypo or copper treatment in QT?

One way or another i wouldn't go any less then 8 week of fishless DT.

I'm going to use copper as I've read hypo can be less effective and harder to maintain properly...

I'm definitely going to go 8 weeks. maybe even more. just to be safe.

Sounds like a great plan bother.

Good luck. Can't wait to see everything put back together.

Does your QT have an active bacteria culture going already?

You know I'm not sure. It's been up and running for a couple months and I have a couple sponge filters running with a couple koralias. There have been fish in there from time to time but not continuously. I've already dosed copper in there a week or do ago but haven't tested since the fish died for cu. do you think there should be bacteria in the sponges? I was changing 4g at least every other day when there were fish in there too. Ammonia, and NOs were all good a week ago too. Kept temp at 78. Thoughts? Thanks!

From my understanding its a good idea to toss some food in an empty Qt to feed the population.

I've also heard of people putting back up sponges in there main system when so it can be tossed in to Qt when its needed to add fish to it. When doing that it's important not to take a sponge that has been in a Copper treated Qt and put it back in the main system.

I can't say for sure if your population is okay.

Its only been about a week since the last fish died in QT right?

How long was that fish in it?

I have a wrasse with a parasite issue (not Itch) but there is no way in hell I can catch him. While he eats well, I don't think I can entice him into a trap so I need to let him ride it out and try some medicated food and mythical reef safe treatments.

If he survives or dies, I need to follow a strict QT for all new fish. I had some issues with my QT tank to the wrasse was not QT'd. Now I am paying the price. Am am thinking about a UV sterilizer on the return but thats another 300 bucks... And some say they don't work.

yeah i've heard about putting the sponges in sump until use too...i wish i had some extras on hand or thought to buy some since now what i have are already tainted with copper! it's been a couple weeks since a fish was in there i guess but there is still some food washing around in there so hopefully that's helping feed the bacteria. too bad there isn't a test for that! i may buy some biospira just to be safe.

this is the exact same situation i am in. no way of catching the remaining fish as is. I have to get in there and move the rock around. in order to do that without damaging my coral colonies i have to pull them out. it's a huge pain in the *** to say the least. because of that i've avoided doing it and lost probably 5 fish i didn't have to. that blows and since my tank is so new i've decided to bite the bullet and just get it over with now. i will NEVER put a fish in my tank without QT. even if QT appears to be stressing him and may kill him. just not worth it. gotta see the forest through the trees since the penalty is complete tank breakdown! i actually considered for a moment pulling my coral and just turning the heaters off in the tank to euthanize the remaining fish but i'm too big a softy to do it!

i also considered the $300 UV sterilizer too and read the same stuff on whether or not it's effective. i guess it doesn't hurt anything but the wallet, but god knows i don't need another piece of equipment just cause! if nothing else i'm running out of outlets!

jlylec, I have enjoyed popping into this thread for updates from time to time. Sorry about your losses with the crypto...we've all been there and done that. I'd seriously consider a trap for the remaining fish. Granted, those fish are hard to catch, intelligent, and small. They do need to eat though...stop feeding the tank for a few days and then try the trap. I imagine they are a little more resistant to parasites since they spend so much time in the sand anyway. I had the same problem trying to catch my wrasse...actually gave up on baiting it and just left the trap in there out of laziness. A few days later, I happened to glance at the tank and there she was...just chillin in the trap.

Good luck with it, and keep up the good work!

thanks Diddy! did you just use that standard 2 liter bottle trap? i think i will give that a try for a week until I get this second QT set up. it's crazy that I'm now faced with having 2 QTs. one with cupramine for fish and one fallow for everything else. and of course the water can't be shared so they have to be 3 separate systems. if somebody could come up with a coral safe treatment for ich you could just put in your DT they would be rich. I'd seriously consider paying like $500 for it right now as the cost and effort required to fix this is much much worse. i'm starting to agree with my wife that i'm crazy for this hobby!

yes it was a gatorade bottle I believe. At first all i caught was crabs and snails. I would have caught my tang 50 times, but it wouldn't fit. :lolspin:

what did you bait it with? i tried to use my acclimate as a trap but it was too big and the food (pellets and frozen) just kept floating away.

I used sinking pellets, frozen krill, even some fresh chopped scallops...those snails and crabs cleaned house and then I just left it empty. The funny part is, the wrasse was so anxious to eat that stuff, but was too scared to go in the bottle. I guess she decided to go figure out how come the food was no longer there HAH!

J, your tank is What Victoria is keeping Secret.

ha...thanks cody! i don't think she'd be too happy about her secret right now with almost all of my fish gone and an imminent tear down to get rid of ich. hopefully in a few months though she'll be a regular erin heatherton...if i could only be so lucky!
