Lyle's 150H in-wall build (with pics)

So like many, after months of reading and loving this site I've decided to start my own tank build thread. I'm hoping I'll be half as good as most who have started these threads at keeping it updated with pics!

I recently built my first house and had space in a wall in the basement framed out to house a 4' wide tank. I had a 72g bowfront that I was going to put in there, but it had a small leak, I read on here those are nearly impossible to fix, and I didn't want to risk it. So after more research on here I decided on a custom tank from Miracles. I ordered a 48"L x 24"D x 31"H with built-in overflow in the back left corner and Starfire front glass. This should be delivered the last week of February.

In the meantime I've been prepping the location and ordering equipment.

In general this is what the tank will look like from the tank room side.
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/80709801@N00/5442961470/" title="Auto Water Change set up by jlylec, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4093/5442961470_224901d9da.jpg" width="500" height="386" alt="Auto Water Change set up" /></a>

This is what I started with. Unfortunately I didn't start taking pics before I built the walls going around the tank and the doors to protect it from dust in the workshop. This is pretty early on though. Stand was just being put in place at this point. It's not stable, or done!
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/80709801@N00/5442319163/" title="Untitled by jlylec, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4143/5442319163_62feaf2386.jpg" width="500" height="374" alt="" /></a>

The display will be viewable in this room in my basement pretty much right above the table over to the right. I have this room a bit more finished now with a theater but it still needs paint, some decor, and of course the tank!
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/80709801@N00/5442972818/" title="Untitled by jlylec, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4145/5442972818_7869477c3d.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="" /></a>

At this point I have the stand ready and have been working on waterproofing everything around the tank with DryLock.
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/80709801@N00/5442320761/" title="Untitled by jlylec, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4108/5442320761_d52708a14b.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="" /></a>

Here is the beginning of the 55g sump/fuge I'm going to use. I still have to decide if I'm going to use the acrylic sheets I bought already at Lowe's for the baffles or if I'll take the advice on some on here to have glass cut at a glass shop for the baffles.
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/80709801@N00/5442321709/" title="Untitled by jlylec, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4101/5442321709_e868fa3c4f.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="" /></a>

I also just bought a bunch of stuff from Bulk Reef Supply. The first order of MANY I'm sure!

I bought a ton of schedule 80 parts and an Octopus Extreme 200 skimmer. My plan is to have the sump done and in place and the plumbing done (in place at a minimum...ready for cementing) when the tank gets here in a couple weeks. Needless to say I have my work cut out for me.

My current equipment plan is:

-Neptune Apex Controller
-AI Sol x 4 - likely royal blues
-MagDrive 1200 for return (will be plumbed to return to either side of the tank along with the fuge nextdoor...all will have individuals valves).
-Drain will be some semblance of the Herbie Method which is why/how I'm planning on having returns going up either side of the tank as opposed to up through the built-in overflow of the tank.
-Reef Octo Extreme 200 skimmer
-UV sterilizer? Not sure about this one. open to suggestions
-a couple Finnex digital heaters
-a couple Hydor Koralia Evolution 1400s
-5 stage RO/DI system feeding a 26g FW tank which will drain to a 26 FSW tank and a 20g ATO tank. I plan on being able to change 20g at a time...hopefully automated with the Apex. Still working on that plan!
-my current 34g RedSea Max tank at my office will be brought home and used as my QT

Stocking plan:

-semi-deep sand bed (4" or so)
-limited rock work...likely a single spiral column built out of dry shelf rock
-fuge with deep sand bed (6" or so) and dry rock rubble and macro
-current livestock of a 5yo Clarki Clown, 3 blue chromis, and a candy cane scooter blenny (can't remember his real name)
-large frags of a few different SPS in my current tank and any other corals I can pull out of there without bringing any live rock or potential hitchhikers. I have some shrooms in there that I constantly regret ever putting in along with a couple aiptasia that came in on some internet corals. I want to avoid any bad stuff like this with this tank. I wish I could use my liverock as it's loaded with coraline, sponges, small clams/oyster looking guys, etc. Unfortunately there's the other bad things and god knows what else.
-Once everybody looks as happy in their new home as they do now I'll start adding some fish. No idea on what yet. I'd like to make this tank as eco-responsible as possible though. I only want tank raised livestock.
-Will add some more SPS and other cool corals as I go...would imagine it will be mostly SPS though. I had some beautiful zoas that got overrun with ugly palys. If I can figure out how to avoid this I'll likely try to create a zoa island somewhere too eventually. Palys and mushrooms are the bain of my aquatic existence!

Any thoughts on what I may be missing or things I should keep in mind? I'm hoping I'm early enough in this to avoid most mistakes if possible. I think I've already avoided about 15 mistakes just based on everything I've learned on RC over the past few months reading! Please feel free to shoot anything at me (constructive is most appreciated but I can be persuaded to spar pointlessly if you're into that sort of thing too!).

I'll post more pics as progress is made.

Here are some pics from my 34g at work. Unfortunately the yellow gorgonian didn't last. It was badass for about 4-5 months. Not sure what happened. Sort sort of swing I'm sure, although all of my SPS's are still growing like mad!

This is my devil crab. He has personally murdered no less than 25 snails. He's lucky I'm a softie or I would've flushed his *** months ago.

Stand is done and ready for the tank. I built a shelf for the sump below as well.

Next step is finishing the sump build, cutting the opening in the wall, and trimming it out.

Of course I am subscribing to this one. What program did you use to illustrate your setup in that first pic?
Google Sketch-Up for the drawings. It's amazing and FREE! I have built SO many things with Sketch-up and I'm still probably a novice. I actually built the entire first floor of our house in Sketch-up before the first bulldozer hit the lot. It's really great for 'building' something to see if it'll work. I have lots in my head that work perfectly but when I set out to actually build them I quickly realize it's not possible for one reason or another! Sketch-up can save a ton of time once you get decent at it.

I found these today in my internet travels...I think I'm going to try a couple out. They're exactly what I need for detail in the mid levels of the tank without a huge pile of rocks!

http://www.aqua-mags.com/index.html

I'm actually considering doing almost the entire tank with them around a single pillar for lots of fish space. Having only one visible side should make this really possible.

Here's a top down pic of my nano-reef at work during a water change. You can see why I'm in a bit of a hurry to get the new tank set up. I take 4g out of the tank and those SPS are out of the water!

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/80709801@N00/5445849129/" title="Untitled by jlylec, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5052/5445849129_5a933cf454.jpg" width="500" height="374" alt="" /></a>

I can't wait to cut huge frags of these guys for the new tank. Although that's going to be 2-3 months if nothing goes wrong!

Here is my sump design. Any comments/suggestions? This is a standard 55gal. I'm putting 1/4" glass baffles in. The height of the baffles is pretty set as I already ordered them from the glass shop, but I can certainly move them around. I've read so much on these sumps my head hurts, but I'm open to suggestion!

Plan is to T the return to feed the fuge with low flow. Fuge will be filled with dry rock rubble and chaeto (anybody in C'ville have chaeto they'd like to get rid of?). I'm going to run a Herbie Method drain using the drilled 1" and 1.5" holes. The main siphon drain will be the 1" with the 1.5" being the excess/emergency. I'll put a strainer on the top, valve, and filter sock on the 1" but nothing on the 1.5" other than a strainer on the top to keep it clog free.

Any thoughts? I hope to get this built and done by Sunday evening. Gotta keep progress going while I wait for the tank!

I'm always impressed with how google sketch can lay something out, it's like having your own draftsman... great looking build the auto water change should be real nice and good idea with the drain right there especially having such a nice looking finished basement

Floor drain - GOOD PLAN! Looks like you have a nice set up coming together there!

I just finished my basement man-cave, starting on my tank stand and behind the wall fishroom myself. I don't have a floor drain unfort. The floors are concrete, and I didn't want to jackhammer the floors to install the drain. In my case, the consolation is that I have a basement sump pit ~15-20 feet from where the tank sump is going to be.

thanks guys...it is starting to feel like it may actually work. just need to get that tank in here! i got the glass from the shop for the sump this afternoon and i'll post some pics once i have that done in the next few days.

BTW...google sketch-up is the bomb...it's the best software i've never paid for!

The next part of my project is cutting the hole and building this trim around the tank to match the rest in the house...

It's looking good so far! I just built a sump for my 75 and laid it out the same way. I like it alot better this way and I think it gives the pods a better chance to get up to the tank and not skimmed out. Looking forward to watching as it progresses!

man wish i would have put a little more thought before i put mine in the wall now i have to fight to hide the ugly stuff......???? and if i only knew then what i know now i had to buy a tailspot wrasse to get rid of my bristle/fireworm overload now im leary to even buy liverock from anywhere....i cant wait to see the setup though that looks very nice....have a q's what is the purpose of a sump does it take the place of a canister filter and protein skimmer????

thanks guys...diddy I read your thread. very, very cool and great craftsmanship! i love the look of the rock wall...especially in an in-wall tank...my problem is that i spend as much time on the workshop side of my tank as i do the main display side. i really want to be able to see everything when i'm in my workshop so i'm likely going to do a spiral column or two in the middle and a few mag-rocks on the glass of the sides and back.

i'm going to run a separate small powerhead from the return area to that drain in the floor. with this and another small powerhead in the FSW tank i'm hoping to automate (almost fully) water changes with an apex controller. i need to be able to be gone for a couple weeks at a time. that's my goal anyway!

for lights i'm really sold on the benefits of LED and i think i have the wife sold off the eco aspect and bulb/electricity money savings long term. Four AI Sol Royal Blues I think. i love the control and lack of heat.

i'm laying out the sump now...a few of the glass baffles i got are about 1/16-1/8 too wide so i have to get them shaved down tomorrow.

how much space do you guys use in the skimmer section of your sumps? does this look like enough?
IMG_3575.jpg

Great start. Looks like you have done your research.

When I do my sump again, there is really only need for one baffle on the skimmer side. This sets the height of the water and keeps it constant for your skimmer. If you are going to use the herbie, there are ZERO bubbles that are caused by the overflow and therefore zero need for baffles. It will also give you 2-3 more inches of space in your sump. Doesn't sound like a lot, better more free space the better.......

HTH

cheers
