Lyretail Anthias question

Should I get 2 females or 1 male and 1 female?

I am looking ot keep 2 but wondering do you guys QT these guys? I have a 10 gal QT and not sure if its a good idea to keep them in there for 2-3 weeks of QT.

also, are they easy to keeP? would they eat NLS pellets? are they hardy? etc.

all anthias Ive had dont eat pellets. lyretails are very hardy. I would not get a pair since they are one of the more aggressive anthias. either 1 single female or male or a trio

I recommend a trio or more as well,if you get 3 young females,1 will eventually change sex or you could get a male and 2 or more females, the males are more vibrant in color but they're all beautiful...

if you have a QT set-up,then by all means do it,especially if you have any doubts in the tank they are coming from being parasite free,I don't trust any fish store tanks around here

my 3 love pellets or anything I feed 'em,they're not at all picky with food...mine are the maldive lyretails from live aquaria...

live aquaria recommends minimum of 125g...they are very active,I assume they require lots of swimming room but they're not big fish, not sure I would put 'em in a 50g though

if you're not totally set on the lyretails, you might want to look at the Dispar Anthias, they're recommended minimum tank size is 70g,that's a little closer to your tank size...they are beautiful fish too

or better looking yet,Bartlett's Anthias...these are absolutely stunning, also 70g recommended tank size

I have a trio of bartlett's and MAC cert Lyertails in my 100g setup and they're prob the best fish I've had. Always interesting to watch. My bartlett's eat pellets but the lyertails only eat Rod's and other frozen currently. But still trying to convince them other wise. Def worth the money either way you go. But would do a trio or just a single. As having just 2 might create a situation where both turn to male and kill each other off.

I had a trio in my 65, Some of the best looking fish I have ever had, and the eveys glow in the blue lights at night. They ate pellets and everything else just about. Mine were only aggresive towards each other but only once in awhile to show dominance. You will need 2 females and one established male.

ALL fish should be in your QT for about 6 weeks. 2-3 weeks is not nearly enough time for discovering deadly and common parasites. Ich, velvet, etc.

if you like the fish, dont let the money be the only thing from holding you back

it did on my first purchase, wanted a black osc. but didnt want to risk paying $55 on somethign that might die due ot past tanks (2 yrs ago) survival rate of the fish wasn't past 3 weeks.

if I get a lyretail does it matter on their sizes? For instance, what if I got 1 female at 1" and another at 1.5"?

are they fast growers?

I wouldnt get just 2, they could potentially turn both to males and kill each other off. Go with either just one and see if your LFS will get in an already changed male or go with 3 of similar sized fish and one will eventually change over. Or get 1 male and 2 females.

are they known for having diseases ich problems etc?

also what is maldive? aren't they all the same lyretail?

I am planning on this one..http://www.bluezooaquatics.com/productdetail.asp?cid=10&pid=329&did=1

I have a fish in QT now that I need to change some water out before i put these guys in, problem is its a 10 gal QT, should I just QT them for lik ea week so the small tank doesnt' stress them out?

Also, any changes i should make in the QT? or just the WC

holy cow just realized the male is 2x the price

Maldives is just where there from. Mine are MAC certified from quality marine so their colors are a bit more intense. And they should be fine in a smaller QT, just make sure you put a lid on it as they do like to go carpet surfing. I ran them in QT for 3-4 weeks in a 10g QT running copper power and prazi-pro. Also in that same time got them onto feeding once a day and eating NLS pellets. Just go with a single male or 3 females and one will turn male over the course of a month or so.

how do you know where its from?

is carpet surfing meaning swimming at the surface or jumping out onto your rug loll

when they turn male do they actually change complete color as well?

I think tomorrow when I buy the anthias I will also treat my clown thats currently in the 10 gal QT for prazipro as well. I was planning on putting him in tomorrow but did some reading and noticed he has been breathing rapidly the past day or 2 and he does have these random twitches in the head maybe twice a day that i used to think he was just being a clown.

HOw long is the treatment that you did? any tips?

You asked what maldive was and I assumed you read that off of a website. Maldives are islands off the south west coust of Sri-Lanka in Africa. Depending on where the lyretail anhias are from dif islands in the indo-pacific oceans depends on what coloration of the species that you recieve. Take a dif species like exquisite wrasses though the same wrasse is found in fiji, africa, maldives and other places each one has a different color scheme to it. Some with more greens and blues while others with orange and reds. Hope that makes a little more sense.

Carpet surfing is when a fish jumps out of the tank

And when a female turns from female to male the coloration of the fish completely changes over to the male coloration as well. Usually takes about a month to completely change over. As some people dont like to wait for the change and want the finished product right away marine wholesalers sell the males at a higher price.

Here's a link to Liveaquaria diver's den. Their selling a trio from the maldives for a really good price IMO.

I treated mine for 4 weeks. But most people reccomend 4-8 weeks.
