my male anthia is acting sort of like a clown fish. it swims towards the female(s) and does its little dance around her then swims off and repeats this over and over. i may just have to capture a video...:love2:
Is he dive bombing the female? In my old tank the male lyre tail was relentless with the females. Ther was no actual spawning but he sure tried. He would swim high in the tank and very quickly swim straight down to a female going just underneath her and come up the other side.
Kind of? He does do a darting towards her but when he gets near her he slows down and "wiggles" his whole body past her. i been trying to video it, ill catch him doing it.
if his top dorsel fin is pressed down against it's body then it's breeding behavior ..if it's high with it's dorsel spike raised high then it's aggression....mine would spawn all the time until my male died...I have another now so hopefully they'll start again.
I agree.
I purchased my trio of anthias as all females; with one being a bit larger than the other two.
The largest female exhibited this behavior right from the beginning.
There even appeared to be a pecking order with the two smaller females. The smallest female took the worst of the aggression and was always the first to bed and last to rise.
And over the course of the past four months, the largest female has finished her transformation into a very nice looking male.
Don't be discouraged though.
I have heard credible reports of anthias spp. exhibiting spawning behavior in reef aquaria.
The fish will dance together towards the top of the water late in the day when the lights are dimmed.
Keep your eyes open.
