Macro algae question.

Hello!

I was wondering if I could stuff some macro algae in my sump to help with phosphates. I have limited room, so I was wondering if I could just simply stuff it in between the baffles in my sump. I have circled this area in red. It is 4 inches between the 2 pieces of plexi glass, 12 inches long and the water level is 7 inches high. The water flow is represented by the blue line (from right to left). The sponge in the bottom will keep the microalgae from flowing under the plexiglass barrior and into the return pump section of the sump. (right now it helps diffuse micro bubbles).

Thanks!

Ohh yeh!!!

Also, what kind of light do I have to have for the Macro algae? How long do I keep the light on? Right now I have a simple flouresent (10 inches) that you would hang under the kitchen cabinets for extra light.

What kind of macro should I purchase?

Find a local reefer with some Cheato. You can use a cheap hanging light from HD. Check out Melev's site. I run my light 24/7, but some run the light opposite of the main tank light cycle.

Aquaticman,
Thanks for the info!

I will try this! My sump has high flow....this will be better for Phos extraction my the macro than a low flow right?

thatll be fine ussually macro grows like a nuisance so it will grow anywhere eventually. my sump is an algea scrubber now. macro everywhere. i just cut up pieces like sod and discard it. great nutrient export the stuff grows daily. it doesnt care how cramp it is or anything so do it as long as it gets light. .....it feeds on nurients

Aquaticman,

Thanks for te link!

ReefD,

Thanks for your input as well.

I will pick up a light this weekend. Have to go to Home Depot anyway to get lights so I can start growing my own Phytoplankton.
