Macro Alternatives - Reverse Ring Adaptor???

Well, i really want to get a nice Macro Lense. I have a Nikon D50 with a 18-70mm DX Lense, and a 70-300mm Telephoto Lens. I would really like to get the Nikkor 105mm or Sigma 105mm lense, even a Tamron 90mm lense, however, im trying to save up for a house, and just brought a new nano, so i really should save my money.

Anyway, i was reading about Macro Reverse Ring adaptors, anyone use them? I dont know how well it will work in reef photography, does anyone have any examples? would they work with my lenses? would it really be 1:1? Below is the article i read on them.

Reverse Macro Ring - Tutorial

Reverse Ring

any info will be extremely helpful, are these just a waste of money?

thanks,

Jeff

Did try the BR2A with my 50 mm 1.4 on my D70s.
Works great on subjects a few cm away from the camera. Of course you loose camera focus as well as metering and you have to work on full manual.
Your depth of field is really shallow so I wouldn't advise it at all for aquarium photography.
Did try to take macros of some of my corals but it just wasn't possible due to the distance. I think with the 18-70 or the 70-300 you will have more shooting distance however you will loose too much image quality. Also I don't know if there is a reversing ring for those lenses. One other thing to take care of is that some reversing rings could cause damage to the camera contacts.
I think it's a nice macro tool for things in a controlled setting where you can play with distance and lighting but in a tank i don't see no use for a reversing ring.
I still didn't try anyother method but i guess I will be trying closeup lenses soon.
Although I know tat ultimately i will have to buy the 105 macro lens from Nikon and then maybe I could experiment with reversing the 50 mm over the 105 which will go to much more magnification if hte 105 alone is not enough for me.

I have a set of Kenko extension tubes, but not with any of the lenses that you're using.

Thanks for your replies. Yeah the more i looked into it i figured i couldnt use the reverse ring. The main reason why i wanted to get a macro lense is for Marine photography. I think i might just start with the filters for now and go from there. My uncle sent me a great website on Macro Photography with Nikons if anyone wants to check it out. http://www.nikonians.org/html/resources/nikon_articles/other/close-up_macro/macro_3.html

be sure to click "more-->" at the bottom of the page, its a couple of pages long.

anyone have experience with the filters?

Thanks,

Jeff

Lookin good Alf, thats a lot better then i can get with my lens. What kind of camera and lense are you using? Those were the exact filters i was looking at.

Nice, i think i am going to give these a shot, just until i can hold over and get a real lense. I guess i should use it on my 18-70mm DX Lense which is 67mm. I guess Nikon doesnt make filters for this size, so i looked on ebay at these

do these look like they will do the job?

thanks,

Jeff

I was not happy with these type of adapters because by themselves they are not powerful enough when u stack them it gets fuzzy

Yep, thats what I do. I attach my 105mm and then reverse the 50mm. I think the magnification is about 2x. It is very hard to work with though. You can only shoot at the subject that is about 1" to your lense. Here are some result.

I also have the BR2A to attached my 50mm backward and the result is pretty stunning. But I prefer to work with my 105mm better.

:eek2: jaw dropping. :eek2: Obviously a true Macro lens is the way to go. I am looking for used ones on ebay, i here you can pick them up for around 200.
