Macro lens mount ring

I recently purchased a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM lens and I'm looking for a mount ring to offset the imbalance when it's placed on a tripod. I've looked on Ebay and Amazon and they both sell inferior quality rings that run from a couple of dollars to $150 for the exact same item. The reviews on these vary from great to horrible. Long story short, where can I get a good mount ring?

Thanks, it's the same brick wall I keep running into. This particular site doesn't carry the ring for the non IS model, but the same ones that appear here are the ones from the other sites. Still looking.

I don't see how Canon can charge that much for such a small piece of metal. That's what my tripod is going to run me.

I was wondering about the tripod. I speak Nikon, but I own both older and newer 105 macros. I don't have a balance problem with either handheld or on a tripod. If you put all your monies into a good tripod, I don't see where you'd have any trouble.

I've thought about that and have also read the same thing on some of those reviews. I'm looking at a Vanguard that will run me about $180-210. The cheap pod I have now won't stay locked in place with the extra macro lens weight. Thanks for the help.

Yeah, I'd definitely invest in a better tripod. Even with the lens mount, you may continue to have issues with what you have (I've used my share of cheaper tripods, so I can relate). I own that same lens, and it really isn't heavy enough to warrant the use of a lens mount, which is why you're having such a hard time finding one. A decent tripod and head are going to run you a couple hundred dollars, but it's a very worthwhile investment.

I agree. a good tri pod is worth more than a lens mount. I have a Sigma 150mm macro which is a big heavy lens with the lens ring. even if I mount the camera base to the tripod it is still very stable. I use a Manfratto tripod.

Great. I just finished ordering this one.

I hope it works well for me. Thanks again for the help.

That should be fine. I've used Vanguard tripods before, and although I'm not familiar with that particular model, the one's I've uses have worked well.
