macro lens question

Time... money... help... it doesnt matter what word you use, the dSLR is capable of producing waaaaaay better quality macros that a point and shoot will.

Yes, you can get some nice macro shots with a point and shot, but not as good as you would with a dSLR.

The DSLR is still a budding calculus student while the point and shoot can't get out of middle school.

Honestly, I while I totally understand the differnce between my two cameras, I have snagged some really nice shots with my point and shoot.

I can get in tight but they obviously lack the sharpness and clarity my DSLR can provide.

I dunno know if you got your question answered or not but here are my thoughts on what you need to do.

Get the macro lens of your choice.
Use a tripod.
Turn off the pumps.
Clean the glass.
Shoot straight through the glass, any angle will produce distortion.
Put the camera in manual mode.
Practice, practice, practice.

Also, you need to have a basic understanding of photography(exposure, ISO, aperture, shutter speed, etc) for it all to come together.

Now that was taken with the 60mm macro lens, some extension tubes, a special macro flash (which is on my realistic wish list) and an excellent tripod.

Is that what is called a ring flash?

I wouldn't call it "ring flash", but it preforms a similar task. the subject was so close the the lens itself, any standard flash would have coasted right above it.
