Macro shots of sps corals

noy
Thanks again for the advice . i will read the manual on moving the focal spot around as this will be really helpful.I will post my attempts in a few weeks to see if i can improve.

Extending noy's good magnification concept further...

I shoot macros tethered to my laptop / remotely. Using the Canon EOS Utility I control all aspects except focus from my laptop. The primary advantage is being able to use live view. As terrific as the 3" screen on the back of my 6D is, it is much easier for me to evaluate the image on my 15" laptop screen. I can be super accurate with the placement of the focal plane anywhere in the image. And I can use depth of field preview to see how the current aperture setting will impact the DOF in the final shot. Plus the image is saved to the laptop directly, so I'm ready to import into Lightroom.

I've also used the 6D's wifi with the Canon Connect app on my tablet to do basically the same thing, only without wires. While my tablet has a great 10" screen, I prefer the laptop's larger size for greater ease of image evaluation.

Nikon must offer similar functionality. I suggest looking into it.

Hi
I thought i might as well put a few FTS on for critique.

thanks Bill

Wow, what an amazing collection! love the tabling sps.
Only comments on the FTS is you may want to crop out the lighting from the top of the shot.
The first shot is great, if your lighting is full spectrum, you may want to adjust it so its less "blue", this way the colour balance will reflect the true colours of your corals (which are awesome). Sometimes its just too much to try to fix post-processing.
For the angled offset shots you might want to back up a bit and take the shot from an up and down perspective. You will have to use post processing to isolate your tank.
Check out the threat in the SPS section on the best tanks in the world (see the posting by dvanacker at the beginning).

You might want to center your pics and bring your focus tighter. Great shots, I esp like the close up of the digi.
