Just bought a mag 36 for my return pump, I dont know if its suppost to be this loud! There is a constant humm and I dont know if something is broken or if this is normal. Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jordan

Put a piece of styrofoam under it. They are definately not the quietest of pumps.

What size tank do you have it on, and is it submursed or external?

Got the styrofoam under it, Sumbmerged and its on a 30G sump feeding a 180G display. Its definitly not the vibrating on the acrylic its something in the motor. Is there a break in period or and i screwed?

One thing to try. Take the cover off and pull the impeller out and make sure there isn't any foreign matter caught in or around it.

If it is new, contact the vendor. They do have a warranty. If used, contact the seller and ask questions. If you bought it from someone on RC, they should at least do something for you.

Yeah that was the first thing i did was open up the impeller but I didnt find anything. I bought it from reef geek, ill see if it gets anybetter. Thanks for your help Man!

No problem. I had a mag24 on a 150g and the styro trick worked to quiet it down so the skimmer was louder than the pump.

If it didn't get quieter by the A.M., I would certainly give reefgeek a call.

I have a mag 36. It is very loud and also runs hot. I bought it from local LFS. They excchanged it for me. Next pump was the same. I only use it as a back-up or salt mixing pump. I have spoke with others that say the same thing, loud and hot. Goodluck! If you find a way to quite it please post and share.

WHy such a strong pump for a return??
That pump is usually used when high head pressures are involved.
380 watts and it WILL heat your tank up.

How much head pressure do you have?
Also, do you need an internal pump?
And why so much flow needed for a return?

Too much flow from the return pumps will make your overflows very loud.

Just IME

You won't get away from that noise. I've dealt with a lot of these and stopped selling them because they all sound like jet engines.
