Mag 7 Restart Issues

I'd tap that glass
I bought a used mag 7 and it has some major restart issues. Almost every time I turn the pump off, I have to bang it hard to get the impeller spinning again. The pump is clean as a whistle. Is there a mod to fix these things?

I have a mag 7 and I haven't had any problems at all with re-starts. I agree with ZC, you may need a new impeller.

I had this problem. I called Danner Mfg and told them that it has this issue and they agreed to send me a new one. When I asked them to send me a new one in advance because mine was in use they said, 'I thought it was broken?' Heh

The new one worked like a charm, except it shocked me when I put my hand in the water! The new new one is in the mail....

No sir ... Just shipping the first time.

I spoke with a girl named Christine. She was very helpful. She usually answers the phone after 9am or so.

Oh I'm pretty sure they send a refurb for replacement. Mine had two labels on it--one over top the other.

I have a few on mag 7's in use. One of the ones had a broken piece in the pump housing, where the impeller mounts to. Something to consider if you haven't taken the pump cover off yet.
Sometimes the little rubber caps on the end of the impellers wear down and the impeller won't stay properly aligned. I have had that problem with other pumps/filters (marineland and whisper).
I too have one that give a shock when you put your hand in, that pump is not in use. I guess I need to give them a call.

k, they actually overnighted the new pump to me! Great!

The new pump's impeller cover leaks like a sieve! Not Great!

I'm done with them. Good customer service. Not good pump. Just ordered an Eheim 1260 :)

the pumps are good, the service is great.Have a mag 9 running my skimmer.Upon taking it apart for it's first scheduled cleaning I discovered the ceramic shaft was cracked. Emailed them with a copy of my invoice attached and received a new shaft and impeller assmbly in about 4 days, no charge.

You do need to be carefull not to strip the screw holes or overtighten, and make sure the O ring seats properly when re assembling

Naw, good pumps work out the box the first time, or the second time, maybe the third time. Shouldn't get to be more than that. Each one has been noisy as all get out too.

My pump will be commited to a long hard life of water change mixing and pumping.

(I never took the new one apart--was afraid it would leak if I did--need not to worry!)

You will love the Eheim 1260. Huge improvement over a Mag7 in noise, flow and durability. Another thing that is nice is the volute doesn't attach with screws like a mag. Much easier to service.
