mag 9.5 or quiet one 3000 for 75g

I just set up my 75g and I am getting a lot of "toilet flushing" on my drain. I have had to turn the ball valve way down on the return to get it to stop. I have a quiet one 3000 pump a storage tank downstairs. Do you think I would get better results with that pump. The overflow drain is rated 600gph. It is a megaflow overflow. I think the mag 9.5 might be too much. Any opinions?

I keep mine below the surface... The water is really annoying when i had it above the surface. I would move it down and see if you get better results. As for the pump i would keep it on. After the head it should be 800gph from the 9.5 I think it should be fine dialed back. The Quietone 3000 is 750ish gph so after the 4' of head the gph will be below the 600gph overflow.

i just switched it out and i had to dial it down too. I have the return hard plumbed and the drain is a piece of vinyl tubing. It is under the surface and I am still getting the flushing...what now? Am I missing something? Ignore all of the purple primer on the union...slight spill :)

What bulkhead are you using? I beleive they come with 2 different ones from the factory. Also try to move the hose above the water surface in the sump... the last thing i would try is extending the standpipe as it way not be high enough.

Ric,
The drain is 1" and the return is 3/4" I will try to move the hose up above the water surface. I thought it would be noisy with the running water.

Thanks for the photos i just seen them now. The flow of the drain is taking a beating with 2 90 deg bends. I would swap them out for some 45's if possible. I would say your drain is able to handle about 500gph or less with the 90's on it.

My fault... i wasn't going to ask why you had a ball valve on the drain. :)

Well it is still restricing the flow on the return. It shouldn't matter. I would keep the 9.5 on. Let me know how the sound is after the drain is raised.

hmmm....the hose is now just above the water level and the gurgling is gone but it sounds like someone is filling a bathtub....I am able to have the ball valve full open now.

Have you tried placing a T on your drain hose? I found that to help my noise problem. It is fully underwater and there is minimal noise from bubbles

where do you run the other end of the T? I am going to run PVC tomorrow. I am out of hose from trimming to experiment...lol

I dont have it run anywhere, its just underwater close to the water surface. it doesnt eliminate the noise but it helps a ton

thanks dan,

where can I get a filter bag? should I still the drain pipe under water an inch or two,

I appreciate all of the replies and suggestions...thanks everyone. This is my first tank with a sump. I built the sump from a 30g and now i am trying to sort out the plumbing. My previous tank just had an HOB filter. Here is a pick of the previous tank that I lost recently due to 3 day power outage. On a positive note, it gave me a reason to finally put together the 75 that has been sitting in my garage for the past few months :)

The bags can be bought at something fishy or champion lighting
The drain can be above the water surface when a bag is used
