Mag 9.5 problems

I bought this from a fellow reefer in the club a few years back. I droped the pump on concrete and it busted the housing that goes around the impeller.
I bought a new housing, and impeller from the aquarium.

It works for a second then it starts rattling really bad, it will surge as well....I can't get a constant flow.

This is my water change pump....So not a huge deal....

If it is trashed then I have another pump I could use I guess....Its an external ampmaster 2100.....Just not sure how to plumb it into the lunch lady trash can that I have.....Any ideas on that?

I would like it to circulate the water and pump it into my tank that is about 20 ft away....

Thanks

I've had problems with two Mag 9.5 pumps. And heard others complain about them before. I think they are a bad design, but that is my own totally biased and unfounded opinion.

If the body was cracked, you'd likely be getting breaker trips, so I don't think that is the problem. There are no moving parts inside the body, so that wouldn't explain the problem. I would guess something is wrong with the impeller or the alignment of the new impeller housing cover. Does the impeller seem to fit in snug and not wiggle around? Perhaps something was bent or a screw or shaft opening was made slightly larger than it should in the fall.

Also another remote possibility: the impellers come in an A model and a B model depending on how old the pump is. Check and see if you have a B on the impeller number. Aquarium only carries the B impellers (but can order the A if you need it). I wouldn't think this is your problem, though, because I do not think the shaft lengths of A and B models are compatible.

i just purchased a mag 24 and it wont restart unless you "tap" it on the side with a 2x4 ,whats up with that ? they certainly are not really high quality pumps .

Have you checked to make sure there's nothing stuck in around the magnet of the impeller? Probably have, but sometimes we miss the obvious stuff.

honestly i didn't take this new one apart as it seems to have the same problem as the first one that i had . the first one was really noisy and this one is much quieter . i did however take the first one apart and the main head seal had been incorrectly installed at the factory but it simply never would restart after the first time that i plugged it in . my lfs warranted it but now i have another that is not working properly . i will take it apart tomorrow and see if there is anything obstructing the impeller or motor .

I ahve had a mag 9.5 in service for the last 4 years without any of the issues described herein. it has restarted well and I always worked well. maybe I got the one good one they made.

I've had two of them running nonstop for about a total of 5-6 years and have never had any problems with them. I'd buy another one if I was doing more freshwater, but I need to get a pump I can run (more easily) as an external.
