Mag not keeping its foot down completely

Acros & Wrasses
I put the mag in on Friday (after treatment), for the most part its been fine, its been moving on top of the rock structure that I built for it and sometimes I would see part of the foot kind of up and just figured that maybe it's still just moving and not a big deal. I just walked into my room with the tank and saw about half of the foot up being blown over to one side. There's no rips anywhere visible.

Too much flow too quickly? Maybe a bad rock, it has a lot of barnacle holes on it (TBS live rock)? It's pretty flat on top of the rock and I'm not really sure what to think at the moment, hopefully someone can chime in.

It has also been trying to climb down the structure I built for it, I guess maybe mapping out its surroundings. It would get about 1/3rd of the way down with its foot and then climb back up and go another direction. Maybe this is important, I don't know, stressing me out right now.

Structure on the right is where it's at.

I repositioned that rock a bit to make the top flatter than in that photo.

The Spocinctus clowns are very small, just over an inch. But maybe they are stressing it out too much? They are hardly even in it during the day so I don't know about that one, they venture out in the tank during the day mostly.

8x54w sunpower, 8" above the water line, I believe I had it raised for pictures and maintenance in that photo.

I did turn the flow up a bit, maybe an hour before I noticed this, but I had forgotten that I had so maybe it was just too much flow too quickly.

Rock may not be smooth enough. May also just be settling in. Though mine has a case of ants in its pants and I've had it for two years.

I'm going to give it some time and if it doesn't stop moving round and round on the rock I gave it, I might just epoxy the whole top to give a smoother surface.

Anemone crawled down the entire rock and sat itself on two of my acros??? I've never seen behavior like this before.

I epoxied the top of the rock to give a smooth surface. One of the acro's seems so have almost no damage from the encounter and the other I can't get a good look at yet but also seems to be OK, is it normal for their sting to be so weak as they're settling in? This mag hasn't deflated again but I'm just wondering if it was pulled from treatment too soon, I had it in the HT for 13 days total because I switched over to cipro from septra... I'm so confused. Is it possible I'm being too cautious with flow and that's where all of my problems are stemming from?

As the morning progressed the foot crawled into a large hole in the side of the rock (it was on the front side in the aquascape shot), this guy is reminding me of a BTA? This is so weird to me, I'm not as seasoned with these anemone's as most of you veterans but it's not my first time working with them.... I flipped the rock upright, maybe this spot will work, not ideal (to me) but if the mag is happy I'm not gonna change it. I turned the flow down, I will slowly ramp it back up as the day progresses and see from there.

Epoxying the top may have been unnecessary if this works out, but I will deal with that later. I will gladly spare a stick of epoxy to the magnifica gods to get this guy to stop moving. :p

It's still too soon to say this has been a success, but the mag is spread out like I've never seen before at about 10" in diameter, and looks very healthy and settled in. This is the first time I've seen it look this way, usually the tentacles were like the original photograph above and the foot was puffed up as it was constantly walking (a very unhappy anemone).

The only time when I've had healthy mags wander on me is when acclimating, or when phosphates and or nitrates were elevated. My guess is yours was just settling in. Even if parameters are fine, there is considerable variation from ocean to tank and tank to tank. I think sometimes they just need to get used to the new conditions before they settle down.

Thanks, I think you're probably right, I think its probably still building up its strength from being sick and that's why it wanted a hole for its foot. After anchoring down in that hole it hasn't moved again which is a really nice change of pace, but I'm going to continue to monitor it for now and hope that it's done moving.

Best of luck, its a beauty!

Thanks! :)

I bought it locally from a shop called KY Saltwater Supplies, sorry that doesn't help you much. I had them special order me a mag and they got a nice one in, maybe I can find out the supplier they used.

Thanks for the update, and not to worry - I was just curious... :)

I have also never seen one that nice at any of my local shops, just the brownish/ green ones, so I hope it does well for you long-term...

My new mag is also acting like this. It's in the display (after treatment that I don't think it actually needed) and has jammed its foot very deep in a crevice. I certainly don't have many concerns about it letting go of the rock any time soon, but it would be nice to see it unfurl completely. Mine came from an LFS in Indiana who got it directly from Bali. It's extremely dark purple (almost black) on oral disc and tentacles, bright green tips and a greenish column. Keep updating on the "posture" of yours, it's nice to hear about another one that jammed its foot into a hole.

Thanks, I really love this anemone and I feel very lucky such a nice one came in when it did. I had literally just reaquascaped my tank with a mag in mind and put word out to a couple of places trying to get one in; I think I got a text like two days later and they had this one come in, it didn't look that great under their lighting so I wasn't sure what to expect. Imagine 2 or 3 radions over a 6-8' frag tank, with the lights about 2-3' above the tanks, not a lot of light--granted I am guessing here from memory so maybe it's not that bad haha.

They've apparently been getting in quite a few nice mags, I've heard of another possible yellow like Minh's old one coming in, and a bright purple with neon green tips, I didn't actually see those in person so I'm not sure. A strong yellow would probably be the only thing to get me to setup a HT tank again (for a new addition I mean), I don't know how some of the guys here do it. :D It saddens me to think there may have been one for sale here and it's probably dead now, who knows.

Mine is no longer in the hole, it's still moving but not nearly as bad. Before it found that hole it was walking all over the rock, even down 6-8", really weird behavior. I was pretty scared a couple of times it was going to let go I have to admit, very glad it's no longer acting that way. It's still in a close proximity to the hole, but slowly migrating rather than wandering.

It's half way down the rock again, also the foot looked like it couldn't handle the flow as it was moving so I turned it down? I don't understand what's going on. It was so happy looking yesterday but I did notice last night a "scar" looking mark by the mouth, I thought maybe it was beginning to split, checked again to see if that's whats going on and it doesn't look like it and that mark is no longer visible.

My n&p readings a few days ago were

no3: 2.5 - salifert
po4: 0.012 - hanna ulr phosphorus

I have a large piece of dry uncured shelf rock I could try to move it onto, I just don't know how I'd incorporate it.
