Mag pump 24

I turned on the pump real quick to check that it works. Does thing thing quiet down when water circulates through it. This thing sounded almost like there was a fork in a garbage disposal almost. LOL Also if I was to run this in the sump should I worry about anything leaking into the water.

You should never turn these pumps on when dry. They rely on water for lubrication and heat dissapation. I doubt you did any damage, but I know for sure you didn't do it any good.

Not really sure what you are trying to ask here but there is nothing inside a Mag pump to 'leak' into the water.???

Be careful with running pumps dry some of them can be damaged. A mag24 will not be silent but it shouldnt sound like what you described, although this was probably because there was no water. Mags can run submerged in sump just fine.

yeah I didnt think that it was that safe to run it dry that is why i only did it for a second to make sure that it ran. But what i was asking as far as running it in the sump is there any oils or anything that can leak from the pump into the return and get into the water

really they are not recommended to run external well I guess that makes up my decision whether to run external or in sump. I guess I am going to throw it in the sump then. One less thing to worry about.

Mag pumps are very reliable, I don't think you should have anything to worry about as far as anything leaking into the water. Mag pumps tend to be loud, I think you will find that even underwater it's going to create some noise, especially one that large- although not the clanking and cluttering you probably heard running it dry. I ended up using two mag pumps in my sump, one to run to each overflow. I think two smaller pumps are quieter than one large pump producing the same flow, and if one pump should fail I still have one pump that will continue to run.

I ran a mag24 on a 150g in sump. Place a piece of stytrofoam under the pump. It will reduce the noise by 50-75%.
