Magnesium. How much, too much, test?

Epsom Salts

Epsom Salts

Anyone know whether I can use this for mg supplement. If so, how do I mix it and use it? I've got a 64 oz container of it, but how much water do I mix that with and how much should I put in the tank?

As per Randy's article:

"Recipe #1, Part 3B

Dissolve a 64-ounce container of Epsom salts (about 8 cups) in enough purified freshwater to make 1 gallon total volume. This solution is added much less frequently than the other two parts. Each time you finish adding a gallon of both parts of Recipe #1, add 610 mL (2 ½ cups) of this stock solution. It can be added all at once or over time as you choose, depending on the aquarium's size and set up. Add it to a high flow area, preferably a sump. In a very small aquarium, or one without a sump, I suggest adding it slowly.

The first time it's added, I recommend adding just a small portion and making sure there isn't any problem (such as corals closing up due to stress) before adding the remainder. Make sure corals and other organisms don't get blasted with locally high concentrations of the main ingredients or impurities, or else they may become stressed. This solution contains about 47,000 ppm magnesium and 187,000 ppm sulfate."

I've been using BRS Mg solution for a few weeks now and have been very happy with it. My Mg started out at 1100 using Elos test kit, and I slowly added Mg daily until it started rising. I have since switched to the Salifert, as Elos measures by 50ppm, where Saliferts measurements are by 30ppm.

After about two weeks of slowly adding, my MG has stayed in the 1380-1450 range by only dosing around 50-100ml per day. For now, I'm measuring everyday to get a good count on daily dosage, and then I'll slowly move to weekly measurements.

As a side note, I"ve noticed a big increase in growth in my SPS(I raised Cal as well), and have since started dosing MicroBater7, which has already improved some color or quite a few pieces. Since dosing Mg, I have noticed my tank stays much cleaner, less cleaning the front glass.

I'm still deciding on dosing vodka. I was going to for color and growth, but things seem really good right now. Only reason I'm still pushing for it is to finally get rid of this bubble algae that has come out of nowhere. P04 is low, like .03, and I'm running GFO as well.

You can use it but you have to be mindful of your alkalinity level as it will raise it.
Kent Tech M is a chloride which will not raise your alkalinity level

In either case consult the dosing calculator and it will tell you how much to add and what the daily limit is

Since I seem to buy something from a reputable lfs at leat once a month, Ive been using the water from the bag to do comparison testing. I always ask what they keep their levels at and use their testing skills and equipment on there end to try and match my tests with. Sometimes I get so frustrated and concerned with my water params. but once i see that mine match the lfs's water I feel much better.

salifert should be showing you the right readings...You could also take the water over to your LFS and ask them to check it for you...maybe that would help

I run my MG at 1450 to 1500 and my Ca around 450 - 500. Mag should be pretty close to three times your calcium (MG=3XCa).

When I dose I get my Ca to 500 and my Mg to 1500 and let it fall to 450 / 1450.
