Magnesium

So I have been batteling low magnesium for apparently sone time now. Never new it though till about a week ago when I got a test kit from zef. Who I still owe for it dang I keep forgetting my bad. Anyway my magnesium is around 600 and just won't come up. I went through one bottle 22oz mag from BBS and so far about a quarter of DT's mag and it won't raise. Any help on this would be great. I am almost to he point of dumping the half gallon in and letting it ride. :-(

My mg was low for a long time. Never could get it up. (MG that is.) I was keeping my salinty at 1.23. I read somewhere to raise the salinty to 1.25 so I did and after that my mg was right on.

I takes tons of Mg to raise just alittle bit. With what all youve added, youve raised it 100ppm, without consumption.

Youll need 4838 ml of BRS to raise it to 1350. A gallon is 3785 ml, so over a gallon to get it "in range."

Justin,

BRS (Bulk Reef Supply) is gonna be the best and cheapest way to get it up. Get magnesium chloride crystals. I use 96 grams and that raises it about 100 mg in my tank (65 gal total Volume). You have to watch your salinity when dosing this as it will RAISE your salinity. DO NOT dose more that 100mg in 24 hrs. So to raise it 700 mg would take at least 7 days. I mix 1 qt RO/DI to 96 grams Mag chloride crystals then dose.

I'm not positive but I believe the BBS(BRS?) mix is Randy's two part. Not sure what DT is though, but it looks like you need alot more than 22oz.

Yeah your bad where's my money. Just playing homie. Rick makes a good point don't go more then 100mg within 24hr. That's something I forgot to tell you.

Vandytime I use Instant Ocean salt mix.

Well I would use the BBS mag mix but seeing as how my problem is immediate I dont want to wait on the shipment to get here before I start trying to fix so I guess for now I am stuck with using DT'S unless someone has some BBR mag they can come off of. :)

I wish this was something that I had been more proactive about earlier. But it has been something that I have neglected, as I am sure I am not alone in that boat. But the more SPS I try to keep the more I am trying to understand how these chemicals are used by the corals and it seems that magnesium is as critical as calcium. They work hand in hand and since mine has been so low, 500-700, I am thinking that this has been some of my problem in getting the growth that I want. So hopefully I can get my mag up over the next week or so.

You may want to use a differant salt with more mag. IO has fairly high mag though - Calcium 400 Alkalinity 11 Magnesium 1350. I use Oceanic - Calcium 580 Alkalinity 8.5 Magnesium 1650. May make it easier to balance. ?

Well guys I do appreciate all the help with the mag problem. But the award for the best help goes to zef for asking me if I was reading my syring right. See I missed that one little part in the instructions that he calculation is done usingthe amount used not the amount left. :-) oops my bad. At any rate all the mag I have added must not have done a lot though cause it is only at 1400 :-) good range for now. So thanks for all the help. Guess sometimes it's not always a complicated problem just user error
