Magnet dissolving

Four drachma

So I routinely clean my pumps in a bucket full of water and a splash of muriatic acid, works great...

I cleaned one of my SICCE pumps today, and it literally started dissolving the magnet on the shaft...

This has never happened before, and I think I salvaged it by rinsing it well under a high pressure hose and stopped the reaction.

My other pumps have the magnet encased in plastic..are SICCE pumps different??

i don't use Sicce pumps currently (nothing wrong with them, just haven't bought any equipment that uses them) , but i have had this happen to other pumps from time to time. i had the impeller on my skimmer start to rust, which caused it to bulge and split. occasionally a powerhead or frag rag will start leaking around a magnet as well.

it always pays to check your magnets regularly. nothing stays perfectly sealed forever. you can probably buy a new impeller for not much money.

For an efficient cleanout on pumps, run them in a bucket of straight white vinegar overnight. The stuff is safe for your tank (pumps tend to retain some inside) and you. Costco and Sam's are a good source for cheap vinegar.

Have to DISAGREE here. It has been shown that vinegar can affect the epoxy that makes the pump waterproof ruining them.
The new cleaner is citric acid powder dissolved 1-1 with water. I have gone 2-1 with no problems.

Interesting! Never had an issue with vinegar yet, but I'll file that one away to remember. Products and vulnerabilities change.

Thanks for the input. This SICCE pump is about 1year old, it seems the magnet is not encased in plastic at all. I kinda thought it would release toxic metal into the water??
