Magnet Suggestions for Stand Skin

Hey Cody-

These are the magnets I would suggest, and you would need to calc weight of acrylic and tear weight to figure out how many you would need.

To help you estimate, we were able to affix a 40x40x.5" plywood panel with some decorative aluminum pieces with just 4 of these (1 on each corner).

Here is the epoxy I turn to for any job. You won't have to worry about it ever coming off unintentionally.

Thanks for the links. So the epoxy will hold the magnets on well? Do I need to coat over them or just to stick them on?

No issue on side of magnet Cody. Get a file or course sand paper to rough up the acrylic side.

Our other side was wood so we didn't have to deal with that.

Thanks guys. The material I have is only 1/4" thick. I'm not sure I'll be able to counter sink the magnets without pushing all the way through the material.

Highly unlikely.... If u think about it.. a loose magnet is just going to stick to it's counterpart. It's also hard to miss a corner not sticking...

Countersink was done to eliminate gap/looks... Not for preventing it from dropping in sump.

I would simply glue the epoxy coated magnets to the acrylic and then cover them with silicone or something similar if desired? Depending on the weight of the acrylic, you could go with N42 or N52 magnets? Make sure that the glue is fully cured before mounting the panels or you risk pulling the magnets from the glue. I learned the hard way, these magnets are very strong.

Hey Cody. I know you mentioned smoked acrylic sheets. Have you looked into the cost of those. It can also crack if not handled the correct way as well as having sharp edges. You may want to consider some thin paneling or plywood. just paint it to a color you want and its all done in one home depot trip. I know this is only short term until it is skinned but probably about 1/3 of the cost.

I ended up getting 1/4" white expanded pvc sheets. Just haven't had time to cut them. Maybe tomorrow afternoon... I have the munchkin most of the weekend.

How did it work out?

No progress. Got side tracked. Did some terrestrial reefing.

Hey Cody, I forgot to mention, the magnets have a coating on it that makes it hard for any glue to adhere. Just use some 80 grit sand paper and take off the the silver part from one of the sides. You will be covering the entire side with epoxy so their is no fear of anything corroding.
