Does anyone have any experience with these or similar magnet locks for there stand?

Before I start stocking my new tank I need to secure my doors from my three year old and passing neighbor kids. I don't want to come home from work and find Play Doe or Barbie dolls taking a bath in my sump or worse.

Kids alway figure out how to work them eventually.....
Isn't that the truth.

a padlock, chain and threats of torture and death wont keep a 3 yr old out. good luck. how about a clamp on lid for the sump?

Best bet would be a key lock and take the key with you. If you need to leave a spare put it someplace high and not obvious. Its either that or a moat with alligators!

So far she's been pretty good about not touching the tank or stand. I just need to make it a little harder to figure out how to open the doors to discourage her if she gets a little curious.
I like the idea of the "invisible" magnetic locks, Just wanted to see if anyone knows if they are well built and will actually hold the door shut if pulled on hard enough.
Besides, I'll probably lose the little magnetic key and lock myself out, LOL..

Get a biometric fingerprint scanner with voice recognition. That should keep em out. At least that works for the spies on tv. All kindding aside, those locks look like they would work but as kids get older they get more wise. So then the locks just keep honest kids honest. Hopefully by that time the kids will understand what not to do.

I bought some Keyed locks a few weeks ago and started planning to install them, but decided I didn't like the appearance of how the finished product would look due to the location I would have to mount them (if that makes any sense). That's when I did some looking around and found the magnetic Locks.

I am glad I do not have to do this. I have a 1, 3, and 4 year old and they NEVER touch anything. My 4 year old wants a frag tank in his room for acropora... (I teach him the names)

Never Say Never.

So far our kids haven't touched it yet either. I just want to take the extra precaution just in case. It's not just the tank I'm worried about, I don't want anybody to get hurt. We all know what could happen when you mix water and electricity and so on.

I just placed an order for 5 magnetic locks & 2 keys. I'll give them a try and post back with my opinion.

I have heard that they work great but have no personal experience. If you don't have any handles on the doors they shouldn't be able to pull very hard anyway. I think the magnetic ones are a good idea for a deterrent.

Everybody knows if you let a kid work on it long enough they will get into ANYTHING. :)

I have 3 kids and know how they could get into trouble as soon as you turn your head. Now they are 15,13 and 8 yrs old and I have to worry about keeping them out of other trouble ;)

Let us know how those locks work out. I may be interested in them myself.

Personally I dislike the look of locks or visible key holes on my cabinets....having built more than a dozen of them.

I prefer snipers.......although the moat with gators has possibilities....or you could just fill the moat with domino damsels!!

That's why those magnetic locks are so neat. They are installed from the back side and they don't show from the front. You have to use that little magnetic "key" to unlatch the door.

I used them in my kitchen and they suck a smart 6 month old could break into them I wouldnt waste the money I acctually think I have a few unopen packs if someone really wants to test them for themselves!!! JMO

How can you defeat the locks without the magnetic key? That would be an advanced 6 month old wouldn't it? lol

Sean,
Just out of curiosity, are the locks you used the exact ones described above, or the "Safety 1st" self adhesive brand?

Im not sure what the brand was I looked for them last night but I know for sure they wernt self ahesive ..they screwed on Door and faceframe they looked nice and worked they just would break at the mounting point if the door got a good jerk would snap right off the door side hope that helps

Sean

Thanks for the update Sean.
I'll give them a shot and see how they work out. I don't have any handles or knobs on the doors for the kids to pull on, so maybe the locks will stand a chance.
