Magnifica got burned

added a second clown last night.. they took to each other immediately.. 30 seconds in he submittied to her 3 different times and was allowed in the anemone(slept in it too).. today when i woke up the anemone was almost its full size again.. about 90% expansion..im pretty sure the clowns hosting is definately helping.. i throttled the flow back a little.. do you think i should have moderate flow or go with the usual heavy flow for it?? also should i run the MH??

Just be careful that the flow isn't blasting the mouth or wound and there aren't a lot of bubbles to get traped in those open areas.

i kept the flow gentle but its moving.. no flow directly on it.. the flow is above it.. i have had the MH on now for about 1.5 hours its still fully expanded, and looks very good(almost as if nothing happened).. i will get a pic later tonight if i get time.. i am going to do 10 to 15% water changes every three days.. i am using a 10K SE 250 about a foot over the tank, i will lower it over time(6 inches above the tank).. the clowns love it, and i believe are helping it.. i am almost tempted to try and feed it, but i believe i should wait a few more days.. its doing well and i hope it continues to progress(knock on wood)..lol..

i know, i know.. i'll try and get the pics up tonight.. my roommate has the digital camera.. ill get it from him..lol..

heres a pic from tonight with the lights off for about 4 hours.. i t was much bigger today.. fully expanded im guessing it was about 6 to 7 inches across even after the injury.. im excited about its progress already from the injury..its a top down shot.. i know it needs to color up a bit and will resume feeding maybe tomorow..

Unfortunately it doesn't look very good to me. It might just be the photo, but it looks like the centers of the tentacles have pulled out of the outside skin, kind of like a finger out of a glove.

That seems to be one of the major problems with magnificas. The two layers of tissue separate (possibly from salinity changes during collection/warehouse/pet store/home tank transfers). If I'm correct, you'll see balls of white string looking stuff inside of the body of the anemone and sometimes in the tentacles where just a bit is left attached.

I always thought this was fatal to the anemone, but I currently have two clones in my tank that have this problem and they have been essentially unchanged for over 6 months. They are still eating, still hold their color, still sting like a @#$%@ and are sticky, but they do not bring their tentacles to their mouths when fed and must have their food placed directly onto their mouths. tissue.

At times I think I am starting to see the inner tissue growing back, but I think it might be wishful thinking. This is different from bleaching which I have seen magnificas recover from.

When I looked at wild anemones in Fiji I couldn't find this problem on any of them, so it isn't the natural way they look.

I hope I'm wrong and it is just the picture.

i do not see any strings anywhere in the tentacles.. i fed some mysis earlier today and it brought it to the mouth by itself.. i know its a little bleached and just suffered a pretty bad injury.. im surprised its doing as well as it is.. we'll see what happens over the next few weeks..

The Magnifica looks fine to me. It is a little light but far from bleached, IMO. Good luck, I hope it recover.

a little update.. its doing very very well.. it is actually starting to darken up.. the tentacles are starting to take on a purplish color, and the tips are getting the extreme white tips back.. it is eating fresh scallops..looks as it is getting bigger also.. i will have pics in a couple hours though i know they will not show true color.. it is about 8 to 10 inches away from a SE250, and is loving it..i would lower it closer but the tank stays constant 78degrees..i am thinking of switching to a XM10K.. i am surprised the way it healed itself from such a bad injury, for this being one of the hardest anemones to keep in captivity it has showed how tough a healthy specimen can be..and i believe IMO shows the importance of clowns hosting(this is where the turn around happened)..

You can keep the temp at about 80-82 degree or so it will do even better. 78 maybe a little low.
Good to know it is doing well.

I try to keep my tank a little warmer and a little saltier as well. 80-82 in the summer. The magnificas we saw in fiji were in 77-78 degree water though.
