maintenance question

Hello everyone!

been a while since my last post, but i am happy to say i finally have my 65 cube up and running (i'll be posting picks soon). I do have a couple of questions though after my first half a dozen water changes...

1. My sand is for a lack of a better word, gross. It seems to be taking on some algae and i'm curious how you prevent that, any best practices?

2. I currently have 2 black clowns and a flame hawkfish. Any good recommendations on another specimen?

3. Same as above, i have a group of yellow polyps, a candyland, and a larger Xenia. looking for suggestions.

Thanks for any help!

Don't overfeed. I would make sure that you have some clean-up crew. Turbo snails, hermits, sand sifting star. A diamond goby would also help keep your sand clean. What is it about the sand that is gross? Is it cyano, diatom bloom?

+1

a good cleanup crew is key ;-)

Deanerp, sorry I'm slightly new still, not sure what those are. I don't get good purple algae like from corals, it's brown patches or green spots of algae. As far as other stuff I have I have 3 snails, what's a good number of mix. I honestly really wanted a small grab to pick through it, but I thought I heard fish will pick at him? Any opinions?

my step dad has 2 clowns and a trigger in his 55g. it also has many hermit crabs (blue legged) and i have never seen a problem with the fish going after them. only time ive ever seen a problem was with a puffer fish.

excellent, i'll keep that in mind. i'm leaning towards a trigger, preferably a picaso, or another hawkfish. i want something with a different swim patern, so i'm leaning a lot of different ways. i appreciate all the help everyone! i'll have some pics up soon enough hopefully!
