Making 1st fish purchase, recommendations?

I'm looking to make my 1st fish purchase this weekend. I'm wanting an active peaceful tank community.

What should be my first choice?

Currently no livestock.

My first fish was a yellow eyed kole tang, set the tone of the tank. Of course I had a lot of algae to cleanup since I bought a used tank.

I would say a flamehawk. Coolest fish with awesome personalities. They have no swim bladder, so they perch on rocks in tank. You can put more than one hawkfish in the tank but it's best to put them in together. Longnose hawk is also very cool!

For a peaceful tank? What are you smoking? :lmao: How about a firefish?

there will always be moderate aggression in pretty much all tanks unless its just like a bunch of seahorses. lions and angels could easily work for a peaceful tank. it all depends on introduction. preferably last for either.

I'm not sure I agree, the only aggression in our tank right now is when the larger blenny chases the smaller one. I knew there might be a problem with conspecifics in the same tank. I plan on removing one of them to a friends tank.

Paired firefish, yellow eyed kole tang, 2 blennys and 1 blue mandarin. I know these are kinda boring fish for most people. We had a wrasse that turned into a bully so he got yanked too. You can do a peaceful tank but it takes a lot of matching the niches and aggression factors.

I would personally come up with a rough list of what you would like to keep. Then I would decide what order to add certain fish because some fish are more territorial than others. For example I would add clownfish before a wrasse or other fish that are shy.

So for my 56g tank I was told 7-8 total fish.

2 clowns (nemos)
3 chromis

What else to make it a lively tank?

Then of course there's the cuc.

Lawnmower blenny is cool, my firefish usually sit in the middle of the tank and swim around and twitch their dorsal fin. A bengaii cardinal always looks cool imho. You'll want to stay away from tangs, triggers, angels, lionfish etc in a tank that size that you want peaceful. Wrasse can be jerks too. How about a clown or tailspot goby.

I spent a lot of time on live aquaria looking at fish and trying to decide what looked good and went well together.

IMO...gallon = X# fish is not a real formula. In this case 'size matters'! I maintain about 7 small fish in my grandsons 29g ...also be prepared to have 1 chromis...they seem to pick on each other (to death)
