Making Waves...

So what kind of waves do corals and fish really like?

Two pumps alternating plus a 3rd at a different interval?

Or would they rather be surprised with a random mix?

Is it super important to have controllable powerheads that start low and increase in output?

Or is an on/off powerhead acceptable?

I don't want to buy something and then it turns out it's all wrong...

Random indirect flow is best. You can use two pumps and point them at each other. You can use 2 or 3 on a wavemaker. You can use a wave maker box or controllable powerheads. There are many ways to have good random flow. Depends on what you buy. For a 130 I would use a few powerheads and point them at each other. Depending on the rockwork you might want to put one behind the rock to reduce any dead spots. Try not to blast the powerhead right at the corals.

dont count out the random abitlity's of a sea swirl on your return. You can usually eliminate at least one power head. 2 sea swirls and your really random.

Hm. What's a Sea Swirl?
And if I point the powerheads towards each other do I time them to be on at the same time? Or alternate?
