Male/Female Clownfish

When purchasing in a LFS, how do you know what your getting? How can you chose if you want one of each?
Is it just the size, if a pair are together, are they considered one of each?

Also if you do get one of each, or a pair, will they eventually mate?

When you purchase them, try to find 1 that's bigger than the other. If not, you can 2 the same size and 1 will become a female. They do lots of twitching and darting around while trying to decide which 1 will be female. As far as them mating, it's a possibility, but not a definite.

what i do is just get 2 small ones. Then you know that both of them are still males, and you can just watch them grow and wait to find out which one grows into a female. Then you dont have any worries about getting 2 females. If you already have one, i suggest getting a small one to go with it so you know that at least one is male and if the other is already female, then the other will stay male if they pair up.

What's really really funky is that this isn't the strangest "sex game" played by a species of fish. There's a deep sea angler fish where the female actually absorbs the male into her body... and kind of fuses with him. They're basically one fish with two genetic codes in it, that can reproduce when ever the time is right to.

That just gives me the willies.

Your best bet is to take a look at the Anemone & Clownfish FAQ here
The first one is specifically about pairing. Good Luck

mating Clown fish

I have a pair of clownfish that lay eggs about every 20 days. The problem is the eggs never survive after the male releases them from the live rock. I never see this happen, so I dont know what time of day he does it. They are so small, they get eaten, or sucked into the pump. My LFS said they are extremely hard to raise, and they have to eat every single day, and the water has to be changed more often. One of there customers has been trying to raise them, and can get them to live up to 16 days before they die. We just gave up, and let them do their thing.

Seen that on tv, was interesting too.

I would make sure you put on some Barry White...make sure to keep the volume low, but audible.

Put on Finding Nemo as well...they like that crap.
