Male Lyretail Anthias

So I've always wanted one and had never seen any in store before, well about a month ago I finally did and had to snag it instantly!
I had 1 smaller female lyretail and I figured it would make a nice pair.
Well a few weeks later that female lyretail, 3 chromis, and a midas blenny all went the way of the buffalo. Never even found the bodies :sad2:

I never heard of them being overly aggressive. When I had first got it, I tried to nip at my shrimp but that was about it. It flares up around my other fish now but they don't pay him any attention and he doesn't attack anyone.

I recently heard that they need an odd number of females to the 1 one male. Like 3,5,7 + etc..

Not sure if I did something wrong or he just went mental and KO'd a bunch of fish. Has anyone had issues with these guys or is there anything I should be doing (adding more females etc) ?

Almost forgot ~ My setup is a 40g breeder.
I have 2 blacker ice clowns, kole tang, orchid dottyback, engineer goby, and the male lyretail.

I suspect the amount, size, and types of fish you are trying to keep in a 40 are the biggest contributor to be quite honest. I would personally not attempt to keep any tang, anthias, or Engineer Goby in a 40 as none of them are suited to stay in it long term.
