Male vs. Female BlueJaw Trigger

How can you tell these apart? I have a one, and when I upgrade tanks soon, I want to pair him/her up.

I just picked up a pair 6 days ago. Tell tail is the blue... If there is a really pronounced blue stripe under the jaw then it's a male.. They also have yellow on the fin tips. Females tend to be just gray and mine has her back fin is a little pink

Thanks. Mine has blue under the jaw, but its not super bright at all. It also does have yellow on the tips of the tail, but not other fins.

Yea looks like you have a male... They don't have super bright colors if they are still young... How big is he? Mine is about 3.5 inches and it's pretty bright id like to get a picture but I'm feed g the tank from around a corner right now cause he is so shy. I found that finding a female was harder than expected. I have an order in with 4 LFS for over a month before one got one in only because their dull colors don't seem to have a market in the stores. I found a great pair and would love to see if you end up getting on and if I get a snap shot I'll post it of my lovers

Great looking fish! Yeah and it does look like a male.

I hope to either get a m/f pair of Bluejaws or a m/f pair of Sargassums in a couple months.

The blue stripe means you have a male. However, a lack of a blue stripe does not necessarily mean a female. In some males, the blue fades if they're kept without a female for a long time.

Usually not, but on occasion they might (especially if you add the coral after the fish is established).

I've never seen mine touch anything in the 8+ months I've had him. He will eat bubble algae though, but only if its floating around. haha.

looks like there are shrimp in your tank, is this type of Trigger crustacean safe?

Yeah, he's never touched them. Bluejaw and PinkTail are two that are generally known to be reef safe.

As with the corals, usually. And, as with the corals, the odds are better if the shrimp are established before the trigger. That said, my last bluejaw ate a large cleaner shrimp that had been in the tank for months.

be careful when pairing these guys up. I bought what looked like a female for my male to pair up with (had no hint of a blue jaw or yellow fins . . . kinda looked like a big chromie) and within a few weeks I had 2 pronounced males. couple weeks later 1 had killed the other and I was back to square one.

I love blue jaw triggers I have always wanted a pair. I worry to much that it will eat my cleaner shrimps.

I love my guys I'm trying to get a picture soon but my make is sooo shy. I have to hang the shrimp from a clip or he will not get any food because he is terrified to come out when I'm arou d

BlueTrig, how long have you had them? My male took a while to feel comfortable to come out, but now he'll come right up to my finger. I let him bite me one day, haha.
