a case by case basis. I have had friends who had them for years not a single problem. then had one buddy who the male turned one day. But as a whole i would say i have seen alot more success with them paired then i have seen failures.
Generally, if you get a male and female, there is no problem. But be sure they are different sexes (dorsal fin is spiked versus rounded) because if you get two males, one of them will perish. See my gallery for mating mandarins.
