Mandarin Spawn

Over the past several months I have went through a lot of equipment malfunctions causing me to lose almost all of my SPS, which was a major bummer. Since I lost almost everything, I tore the tank down so that I could build a rock wall in the tank. The stuff that survived which was mostly zoas, dendros, and some random softies went into a 125 gallon tank (and a bunch of sump rock with aiptasia, grr). I also moved my mandarins from a frag tank I had into this tank so they would have more room to spawn. I wish I had cleaned the glass because I took a few quick pictures and Video. I collected a few eggs just to see if they were fertilized or not, so I guess well see. Even though I lost all my pretty SPS colonies at least I still have a few neat things going on in my reef.

Eggs are hard to see but I collected a few.

Hey thanks guys =)
They spawn once a week or so, getting the eggs to hatch is apparently pretty hard. I have clowns which spawn regularly and was able to raise up some larva but i dunno if I'll have luck with the mandarins or not.

Man that is neat. Being a person who has raised clowns. If I were you, I would be totally dedicated into figuring out how to hatch and raise those mandarins.

Are they the only fish in the tank?

Yes these are the only fish I put into this tank.
I'm thinking about adding another female or two to the tank, to see if I can get more eggs a week.

I have been raising some clowns as well, I'm still new to it and sadly lose more larva than I should but I'm getting it down.
I'll take a quick video of the clown larvae I have at the moment.

Okay this picture is 100% horrible but they are so transparent its hard to know what your looking at but they are basically eggs with tails right now.

I circled a few so you could kinda see whats up.
The mandarin larvae have no eyes and no mouths for three days, then they can begin trying to feed.

Sadly I expect to lose all of these because the food I have available (rotifers) is apparently too big for these guys.

Rotifers are too big? Wow....what the heck you supposed to feed them then?

Ya know....Mandarins are a relatively cheap fish in the retail market.....However, the ones that are ORA has had that will readily eat prepared foods go for considerably more. So you may want get serious about learning how to bring these things to market size.

I sure hope you find the tricks!!!

Well I would like to raise them just to be able to do it, I think it would be really fun to do. They eat Pseudodiaptomus pelagicus which is a tiny copepod. You raise them pretty much the same way you do rotifiers, they are just smaller.

So my mandarin obsession continues.
Have another pair that started spawning again last night.
This time in a refugium i have strictly for these 2.

Yeah I'm in it for the challenge and so far it's driving me nuts :)
Have some cleaner shrimps I'm trying right now as well.

I have several clowns which i have raised.

My green chromis spawn regularly als but haven't attempted those yet.

Have to get together on notes for the shrimp. I am on day 7 of my banded shrimp babies. Wondering how long I can keep them going.
