this is mine ive had her about 3 weeks i put her in a 29g by herself for now then she will go in my 75g

Let it be know that although larger tanks are prefered manderins can be kept in a 30 if the conditions are right.I have one in my 30 that is thriving,I do have a 20 gallon sump and a 10 gal.fuge in a established tank but it can be done.I also suggest takeing the little guy back before it's too late. They are awsome fish.Good Luck.

about ten people said dont be discouraged
the LFS you went to to buy this fish knows way less than the members of this board trust me there is no place on the planet that has more knowledge of reefkeeping

if you want the fish to live be open to changing things
these fish wither up and die in most tanks

Everyone is just trying to provide quality information to you. Mandarin's are extremely difficult to keep and have a very low survival rate in aquariums. Please look into the information that was given above.

It is very crucial to do your research before purchasing things that you're not sure how to care for. It'll help protect those animals and also help save money.

I hope that you will come back and post soon.

No, we're sorry. I guess we thought you would want to know what to do. If you don't want to ask any more questions, your choice; but there is a wealth of good, right on the button, advice given here every day. It would be a shame not to take advantage of it.

BTW, I read and re-read all the replys given on your thread. None seemed rude or ignorant. I hope you don't learn the hard way about the LFS and their advice. Not all stores, but most. All who read this know what I mean.

If I am missing something here, someone please enlighten me.

you say ur not being rude but i find it funny im getting priate messages because of some of the things that are being said

i lost my beautiful full grown male mandrin the other day....i forgot to close the tank lid after feeding...he jumped out ad was completely dried out and hard when i got home from work and found out i forgot to close the lid......i wont make that mistake again....i hope i can find another mandrin as beautifly colored as he was

the mandarin can not go back to the store once u got the fish its urs so all im asking is for somone to help me keep this fish alive thats all im asking???

Well my sugestion would to be run out and buy a bunch of live rock....get some saturte covering from a friends tank with a large population of pods. buy some live pods.and find a new fish store if they have a no bring back policy.

Iam sorry that i donot have a solution that is not going to cost a lot of money but that is the only solutions i have.

I hope all works out for you and your mandrin

With 50 lbs of rock.. If you have any rock rubble - like tiny little crumbles of rock you can pile them up in a little area that other fish or critters can't get into.. And get ahold of some copepods - be it from your local fish store or online at some of the sites provided earlier in this thread - if you get them online you'll probably have to pay shipping costs..

When you get the pods you can acclimate their temperature and add directly to the tank- if some make it to the little rubble structure they very well may begin to breed and hopefully help support your pod population. I would recommend getting more (cured) LR in the future to help propogate these guys.. they will hide away where a mandarin can't get to to breed. With a large enough population they will make more pods than the mandarin can eat and thats they key.

You add these guys to your tank. A mandarin very nearly eats like 1 pod per second. They will stay fat and happy if they have enough live food to pick off of.

In the meantime you may try mysis shrimp mushed up or cyclopeez which are very tiny dead prepared foods that the mandarin may be able to get into its mouth- its very small and specialized just for picking these little bugs off of the rock.

If that doesn't work I've heard you can try just the plain - no additives added - flying fish eggs they put on sushi - little orange dots. Supposedly some mandarins will eat them. They are a very calm and docile fish and need to be able to get to the food. You can check melev's "mandarin diner" out if you have other fish that compete for prepared foods http://www.melevsreef.com/mandarin_diner.html

I hope your Mandarin makes it and you are able to find a suitable solution for it's nutritional needs.

I really wouldn't take what others have said here personally - It *is* a good idea to research before you buy, but sometimes we all make that great impulse buy and have to find out what to do in a hurry afterwards. They tell it to anyone who approaches reef keeping that way - Reseaching in the future will be a vaulable resource to avoid expensive mistakes - but it is nothing personal and just a part of responsible reef keeping.

No harm done so far, can just go forward and see if some of these tips help make your mandarin fat and happy :)

Mandarins are not that hard to train to eat frozen dead food. My LFS has many mandarins in their tank with VERY little live rock or what i would say no live rock. What does that say.... There bellies are full... He feeds them frozen stuff... Those mandarins have been there forever.

You need to try new techniques. I can tell you my LFS knows a lot more than most people here. Their show tank is unbelievable and they don't follow everything that is said here...

What that means is that there's more than one correct way of doing things... Maybe the regulars here need to be a little more open minded.

To me that says he probably has his rock elsewhere and/or a source for pods elsewhere. But maybe not. Usually pet store's tank systems are rather complex and generally rather large. You should ask them. ;)

If you can milk any information out of them, I for one would love to hear some of it!!! And I'm sure it would benefit Jenny as well.

On the other hand... you are correct. Open mindedness would be wonderful, and Mandarin's are a touchy subject with people.

Check this article out: http://joshday.com/mandaringoby.htm

In anything and everything you must take others opinions and your own experience to find whats best for you.

Jenny...

To keep your fish alive, you are going to have to feed him pods and probably buy them to begin with until your tank can sustain them OR, if you can find a way, you can try to train him to accept prepared foods.

No matter what, you will have to research and put some effort into finding a way to get him to eat, whether its feeding him krill and bloodworms, as was suggested to you, or you end up trying to get your pod population up.

Whatever you do, just try not to get too upset with those that "seem" rude or narrow minded. There is usually experience associated with their comments, but obviously no one knows it all.

:)

Good luck and keep us updated!

Brandon

I want to thank all the "ignerant" people in this forum who have helped me get started in this hobby.

Yesterday marked one month with my tank running. Thanks for everything.

BTW.....I am celebrating by going and buying me a mandarin today!!!!!!!! J/K

One thing I've learned from buying mandarins is to ask the pet store you are buying them from how long the fish has been there and if they have noticed them eating at all...If it was recently brought into the pet store, put a deposit on it to hold it for you, and come back in a week or 2 to see if it is still living...

I've had a target mandarin for about 6 months now, and mistake I made in the past when trying to add a psychedelic mandarin, was to not find out if it was eating or not...Would bring one home and after a few days, it would go MIA...I've got thousands of pods in my tank and fuge, but if it's not going to eat them, it's a waste...

To everyone who downed me about my madarin hes eating frozen food and doing wonderful hes swimming around like crazy so thank you to the people who were actually nice on this web site and [violation]

As an unbiased reader of this thread, I would like to make a comment or two. I'm not intending to sound harsh or mean at all. My intent is to try and calm angry/ hurt feelings.

There are issues such as these on all forums. There are also "police" groups on forums. On this site there are tang police to pop up when people want to put a tang in a 30gal. I have found that these "police" get irritated when, oh let's say once a week, there is yet another post of someone buying a tang for a 30 gal and wonder why it's not doing well.

I am also a member or a reptile forum. The "police" on that site are the iguana police or python police. They get touchy when someone buys a cute little iguana and they haven't planned for the future when the baby will be a 5 foot animal with huge requirements. This is why there is a huge population of wild iguanas and pythons in Florida. These are not native species and they could damage the ecosystem.

I'm not condoning anyone's behavior. I have found that everyone is helpful. I personally have never had a problem. I also learned my lesson when it comes to impulse buys. My boyfriend, who has more experience, let me buy a dwarf lion with out doing any reading first. He was watching over my shoulder as I stuggled to get him on frozen foods. He never told me what to do, and when I posted here, I knew there was a chance someone would get irritated, but I took it. I knew I deserved it.

I think everyone should have a more open mind. And losing one's temper (and I'm talking to everyone) will make people hold off on helping or asking questions in the future.

I'm not focusing on anyone specific.

I think it's fantastic that your mandarin is eating, Jenny.

I think everyone should also walk away for a bit, regain tempers, and come back. I'm just trying to be a peace maker before this gets out of control.
