Congratulations Jenny, thats great! You have certainly beat the odds. :celeb2:
This past weekend my daughter and I went to one of the LFS we frequent every weekend and they had in 20 or more green and spotted(psyc.) mandarins. I was explaining to my daughter that we couldn't get a Mandarin for our 24gal., unless on the off chance we could ever find one that was eating prepared foods. My daughter asked the owner if she ever got any in that ate prepared foods and she said "sometimes" and would check the ones she had in stock. Out of more than 20 there were two that did eat her mix of mysis and formula 1. I was actually shocked to find even two of them did. Needless to say my daughter was excited and we ended up taking one of the spotted mandarins home with us. It eats mysis like there is no tomorrow. It eats whole pieces so big it looks like a snake trying to swallow it's prey when it swallows it, or an oscar when it eats a feeder fish would be a better example. Our green mandarin in our 50gal. on the other hand will have nothing to do with the mysis. Count your blessings, you got lucky.

Hi Johnny,
You posted "Mandarin's are extremely difficult to keep". I am wondering why. I bought one about 20 years ago when I was new to salt water aquariums. The set up was also just a couple of months old. It died the next day. I think that it was just to stressed out from recently arriving at the store and then me buying it. I was reluctant to buy another one until about 14 months ago. I had read that they liked a well established aquarium. He was put into an aquarium that had been established for about 8 years. He is doing very well. He has grown and is nice and a little "plump". He eats food that we give him, but he also sifts thru the sand bed. He looks fat and happy!
Do you think that the success has been because of the established sand bed or maybe something else?

For Buzjerry. I asked the same question when I finally realized that my LFS had mandarins in 20 gallon displays. What I hadn't thought of is that many fish stores have their tanks running on very large systems. Even though the display tank may be small, they have tons of pods anyway. Just a thought.
