Mandarin

The LFS stated that a mandarin would survive on Cyclopeze. My reading shows that they might, but they might refuse to eat anything but pods. Can a mandarin survive on Cyclopeze, or is it at best, a maybe?

I'd be leery of an LFS telling you that. Sounds like he just wants to make a sale.

It is not in the best interest of the mandarin to try to support it with cyclopeze. You should really let your tank mature with pods so it can live on what it's supposed to.

Do you have a fuge on your 55?

Do a little research here on RC about what it take to maintain them. Some have trained theirs to live on frozen foods.

PS: I'm glad you posted your question before buying the fish. Good job!

yeah I saw a Mandarin this weekend at the fish store in Bemidji, MN. I wanted it SO bad but I knew from research that I need to have an established tank. I didn't want to kill the fish by starvation.

I see you have your experience as Novice... how long has the tank been set up? Also , as Amazon asked, do you have a fuge that can support pods? If they eat frozen food that will be great, but use that as a suppliment.

If it's eating cyclopeze in the store it's a possibility, since it's already weaned onto dead foods. You can always enrich it with selcon or something like that. Have them feed it for you, and make sure that it is actually eating.
