Was he hunting? Or just hanging out? What sized tank?

How long had you had him? I had a mandarin that was active and eating frozen mysis. Then one day I was walking by the tank and he was dead, I had him for 3 months. I read that if they were captured using cyanide that it can keep them from absorbing nutrients, so even if they are eating they can still essentially starve to death.

If it was eating (anything) cyanide was not the issue as then they would not eat at all. Most likely insufficient copepods to keep it nourished (mysis is nice but normally not sufficient).
