Mangrove Substrate questions

I am looking to provide the ideal substrate for an all-mangrove tank. Though these plants are more commonly seen in full marine or brackish conditions, freshwater is not out of the limits for the tank. After doing some research on the natural habitat and environment of the mangroves (red mangroves, in this case), I have found what i believe to be the three most appropriate substrates to use.

AND PEAT MOSS

my only questions are:

What is the best combination of these?

What are the advantages and disadvantages to using each of these substrates individually?

Can anyone recommend another good medium?

thank you.

The substrates you have shown will work just fine. I dont believe Mangroves are going to be too picky about substrate. They even do fine without it. The main thing will be getting the appropriate mangrove for your setup. Red mangroves are best suited to full marine strength water continuously, fluctuating salinity will kill them. Black Mangroves are best suited to brackish water, and white mangroves are more terrestrial and best suited for freshwater. Of coarse each species does have tolerances, and can adapt to slightly higher or lower salinities, maintaining that salinity or lack of is the key.

As of yet, I have only been able to find the red mangrove species availible. Does this mean that the others will not fare well in tank setups, or just that they are not as frequently requestd by consumer market? (I f you do know of a site for the other species, please let me know)

As for the substrate, How should I prepare it?

Layering, mixing?

Thank you.

I would stick with one grain size if you try to mix grain sizes the larger stuff will eventually migrate to the top. The others do fare well they just have different requirements. Check with exoticaquaticsandpets on ebay for black mangroves they frequently have them. I bought my red from them along with some other things and their service is good.
