mangrove update

they have been in at least a month already. so 3 to 4 months total, its in a 20 tall with a 6 inch sand bed. so they dont need to grow a whole lot to reach the sand bed. eventually when they reach the sand bed and drop prop roots and establish im going to set it on a tidal system where the tank will drain 1/3d of the way twice a day for a cople hours.

is that tank connected to your already running tank? i want to do something similar to this but im afraid it would cause some sort of "mini cycle"

I just bought a beautiful mangrove from a LFS last week that was split(cut) a month ago and is now branching upwards. I'm worried that I may not have enough nutrients in my newer refugium than in my established DS. So I will most likely move it up and into a corner of the tank. My lights are adjustable not in a hood. will the deeper depth of the water in the DS have an effect on the growth of the leaves?

the only thing the light would matter on is the leaf. it wouldnt matter on the root structure. it would just take longer for the roots to hit the dsp depending on the depth of the tank.

Any experience with purchasing pest-free, healthy mangroves would be appreciated.

thanks, were they sprouts w roots? I am considering a rock refugium and only plants/corals in the Display tank which is an Elos rimless so the mangroves can grow up out of the tank

Mangroves on E Bay

Mangroves on E Bay

I recently purchased 21 Mangroves from a guy on E Bay he is in Hawaii and I will tell you I got some really healthy mangroves they are in my fuge for my 100 gallon SPS holding tank.
They are growing roots and the leaves are growing in nicely most of them were 2 leafs each now most are 4 or more leafs.
I gave some to a friend here who owns a LFS his son put 4 of them in fresh water in a fish bowl on thier counter with only light from the front door and a few in his salt water sumps all are growing nicely

I pick the seeds off the beach and start them in my overflow. The high flow allows for some quick root development and they sit about 4in from a 12k 150w MH. Once they touch the light fixture I have to trade them to the LFS.

i was broke at the time of the build, although that hasnt changed since the build. i had really limited funding. so i drilled my own tank eyeballing on where the water level should be, put a bulkhead in the side near the top with a 90, then used a reducer slip fitting, cut my own weirs out of it with my table saw guessing how much flow it would take, painted it black with krylon fusion. sump looks like haiti right now, disaster area, the draining water goes along the back of the sump and dumps into the first chamber of the bubble trap, and can be shut off by the ball valve making the mangrove tank self contained. the return line is a very small power head in the skimmer chamber. the return end has been upgraded with a u shaped pipe that has a flattened lockline end. total cost of tank, plumbing, and hardware $20, lighting $150, lighting mounting $5, sand i had laying around, mud from florida $30, crushed oyster shell from the feed store $5, mangroves $12, seagrass $25, stand i built myself trimmed and stained $30, that about covers it if you have any more questions please ask im more than happy to answer them.
