mangroves

just a curious question---
can you take mangroves from a saltwater enviroment and plant them to a yard pond(freshwater)?---will they survive and grow in an outside pond?

From what I've been told they have to stay in the type of water they start in. That being said, I've wondered if you could slowly drop the salinity.

mangroves can be "trained" for either fresh or salt water but it must be done very slowly when they are real small. Most of the ones that you are going to buy on the internet or from nursery suppliers will be started in fresh water and to put in saltwater must be acclimated a little at a time for the higher salinity of our marine tanks. Most natural growing mangroves ar in areas where there are considerable salinity swings.

Mangroves also need to have the leaves "sprayed regularly" wioth fresh "ro water" in order to keep salt creep from building up on them and killing off the leaves!!
