Last night I brought home a gorgeous G. smithii mantis shrimp to put in a species only tank (along with Grunt, a gigantic hermit crab). Last night Grunt molted... mistake! I went to the store for some live food for the mantis and when i came home, Grunt was crying in the corner, and the mantis was right behind him, chewing on Grunt's dismantled large pincer arm. I think the mantis was TRYING to be evil, because of all the other targets of opportunity in the tank (smaller hermits and snails) he chose to think ahead and destroy the best weapon of his most powerful enemy. He's smart! Not genius IQ, but almost...
To console Grunt, I gave him some seaweed. He happily (as happily as can be after a Saw III like dismemberment) munched on it. The mantis, evil as ever, abandoned Grunt's dead claw, rushed at Grunt, smacked him in the face with his raptorials, and stole the seaweed...
The mantis munched on it for a little bit, but I think mostly he's trying to weaken his competitor for the "king of tank" title.
