Mantis hiding.

In Memoriam
I got a mantis on thursday and I havent seen him once since he was acclimated to the tank .Is this common for a mantis to not show its self?Should I check the rock for a dead mantis?

Hey Jay. It might take a few days for the mantis to get "comfortable" so I wouldn't worry about it yet. See if you can coax it out with some food. When I don't feed mine live food, I use a pair of tongs to feed it pieces of shrimp. You might have to wait a few minutes for it to take the bait but it's worth a try.

Well I got scared and moved the rocks and no mantis. They do burrow in the gravel correct?

annick how big is your mantis and what do you feed him?

Smashers tend to hide out in the rock and spearers build burrows in the sand.

Mine is about 1" long and I feed it nassarius snails, blue leg hermits, pieces of freeze dried shrimp and sinking krill pellets.

Depends on the type of Mantis. I got several as hitchhikers from Tampa Bay. They rarely come out . On the other hand the LFS has a nice peacock that spends a lot of time roaming around the tank.

It still hasent come out.Im not likeing this to much.I even through in a little nassarius snail and he still hasent emerged.

I cant even find mine I moved the rock around yesterday looking for him and he is nowhere to be found.I figure maybe he crawled out of the tank but he's not on the floor anywhere either.
