LOL...I just wanted to let people know that my mantis successfully molted last night. He hasn't come out yet but I looked in his cave with a flashlight and it looks like his color improved. I was wondering...do mantis's colors usually improve when they molt? I have a Gonodactylus smithii and I'm not expecting it to molt one day then out pop a peacock but I was just wondering how nice they would get. Anyone have a pic of a Gonodactylus smithii with almost "Perfect" coloration??

Congrats on the safe molting! My second peacock plugged all the holes in her rocks and is going to molt, I think. Or maybe she heard the local aquarium society is coming by tomorrow. :) Not going to be much to look at in her tank! Although it's rather funny, she couldn't plug ALL the holes perfectly with rock, so she yanked down all the macroalage, tore it into bits, and stuffed the remaining holes with it. She's quite the character. At least I can count on not being woken up at 2 am by her smacking things for a bit! :D

Oh, in regards to color changes, my first peacock molted recently and her colors are definitely duller. However, I have kept two other species a while back and both molted without changing color. Maybe peacocks are just different.

How long did it take for your mantis to eat after it molted. Its been like 2 days and my mantis is still in his cave..not eating. I'm hopin that it grew back its clubbers when it molted. I had heard that sometimes they dont.

Large gonodactylids like G. smithii can take a week or more to start eating soft food and they won't try snails or hermits for even longer. O scyllarus are unusual in that they are a large animal that starts eating in two or three days.
