Today I was watching my 3 month old tank after feeding and noticed a purplish creature come out from under a rock to grab some food. Called to my husband that we had a mantis, we managed to pull the rock out of the tank and dip it in 1.03 salinity water, and out it came. My husband wanted to keep it as a pet, and since our nano already has livestock, he put it into our sump (which is 40 gal).
Questions are:
(1) We have 24 hour lighting in the sump. It was supposed to be sort of a refugium with some rock rubble and caulerpa and pods. Will the mantis be happy with those conditions?
(2) I assume we now have to start feeding the sump, i.e. the mantis won't be satisfied with the food that flows through there from feeding the main tank? Note: The mantis is still smallish, maybe 1-1/2 to 2 inches.
I am starting to get creeped out by my tank! Next step is to try to catch this large crab I've seen crawling around at night. Guess this is the risk of ordering 150# of uncured live rock.
