My 60g tank has been set up about 7months now with a refuge. i noticed a bunch of "bugs" in the refuge, to my dismay i i have a lot of baby mantis shrimp swimming around down there too. How do i get rid of these little buggers. I have 3 parts to my refuge and I drained one of the sections and put warm fresh water back in that section and let it sit for about 12hrs. I counted 12 to 16 mantis shrimp from 1/16th to about 9/16th in size. How do I remove the small ones out of my live sand part of my refuge with out killing my "pods"? I would like to get them out before they become a big problem in my tank. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've heard that is just about impossible to raise baby mantis shrimp. Even with the most careful handling (ie taking each individual one in its own container, and giving numerous daily feedings of live brine shrimp, there is still only a small chance they will survive... Roy has said he has only been succesfull a couple of times!

These little guys look just like big mantis shrimp ecept they're clear with a little hint of brown on their backs. If (and i say if) they are mantis shrimp should i be too worried and wait and see if they die off? My main concern is if they get big enough they been known to bust aquarium glass, not to mention the one fish I am tring to get is a manderin (a slow moving fish that it can attack)
I am truly lost on this subject of mantis shrimp and what they look like when they are that small, but like I said, they look and move just like mantis shrimp but very small and they are clear. Are there any good web sites on these things when they are babies so i can get a better understanding of them???

Like the others, I seriously doubt these are baby mantis shrimp. Napulli are pretty much impossible to raise in captivity, even when we're trying to make it happen, so 12 - 16 babies just happening to survive in your tanks seems...unlikely.

Can you get a picture? My guess is that they're some sort of amphipod.

I'll try to get pics tonight and get them to you but i can't promise anything. i get bad glares. i'll read the photo forum when i get home to learn how to get good pics for yall to see. I just want all of you to know know that I really do appreciate all of yall's help.

Ok, heres the pick of one of these little buggers. Can anyone please tell me what this thing is??

Ok, is that a good pod?? Sorry for all the questions but this is still new to me in terms of litter critters and things like this in my tank. I also have ones that look like little fleas and that type.

I want to tell everyone "A BIG THANKS FOR EVER BIT OF INFO". Everyone has been such a big help and i appreciate every bit of it. Hopefully now that i know how to put pictures in my gallery I am going to try and put my pics of my tank in there and everyone can give me better ideas of scapeing it. Please take a look at them time to time and feel free to give me ideas on my tanks.

Hey Will,

If you want to increase your pod population, get a ball of cheto. Its a macro algae that looks like a green brillo pad. Pods love it multiply quickly.
