Mantis Shrimp set up

True just figured with a maxium of 4" id be safe with a 3/4. figured 1" would be better but didnt have what i wanted. Now knowing that i have too keep it simple i can prob do it with what they had.

If I remember correct I think Roy stated that the burrow should be twice the width. Length doesn't matter as long as it's long enough for total darkness. When it flips it's folded in half so two times how wide it is. In the wild they have two entrances. Anything more will get blocked with rubble but try it out anyway. They usually make a U shape. But it can be L or angled any other way to fit the tank.

PVC burrows should be 2.5-3x the length of the animal and 1.5-2x the width of the animal. If it's too big and elaborate you won't get any flow in the pipe.

OK thanks guys. Just had the idea if build first i could let it cure over the weekend and then have it all ready to go when the little guy came in. Poor idea i guess. So it seems that ill just have to wait and how big it shows up.

I emailed http://www.tampabaysaltwater.com/the...organisms.html they said they have them for $50 to my door ~2" for a N.Wenerrae. They said they also do not guarantee a live arrival due to the post office. The guy said they have shipped tones of them (if they dont arrive doesn't really mean much). Has anyone ordered from them? Seems like im just flushing $50 with a flip of a coin.

I mentioned bluezooaquatics earilier but they do not sell N. wennerae.

They sell G. smithii, L. maculata, O. scyllarus, G. Chiragra, G. viridis, and another gonodactylaceus we don't like to talk about thoroughly.

Arrive alive guarentee though! I've recieved many animals from them.. often replacements of animals purchased from other retailers that did not arrive alive..

Thanks Joe. Was just seeing if anyone else had any place they liked to get their mantis from. I think im going to do a loop through my LFS and see what available if nothing ill order one online.

I got my N Wennerae from TBS but it came in the live rock i bought, Peacock from iBlueWater, and O havanesis from sealifeinc.net. I'd recommend all 3

I have shipped a zillion of them over the years..with the post office....with only 3 DOA out of all of them...but using the post office is a toss up, literally....imagine how many times that little box gets tossed, thrown, ect...on an express overnight shipment.....to your door...

The shipping cost $30....and the box and packaging is $10.....and the shrimp $10...so I don't guarantee the postal services handing of the little guy...as if it does not work, there is a $40 set cost for shipping another one....

there is little $$$ on these guys, I do it as I get them in my rock, and folks want them...but I don't like going backwards...lol

The airlines are infallible when shipping rock/critters.....works every time....but they all have a minimum charge of $90 for up to 100 pounds....is why the post office is used for a single mantis shrimp.... as $90 in freight is hard to swallow for a $10 shrimp....

sea ya

Thanks guys. Ill be finishing up the plumbing and what not hopefully today or tomorrow. Once that is finished ill start to really start looking.

Richard: Thanks for the insight 3 out of a zillion seems like pretty good odds to me ha.

So after calling around today a couple places have peacocks that are small 3-3.5". Both places said i would be unable to keep them in a glass aquarium and it needed to be in a acrylic aquarium. I can imagine a full size peacock breaking through break a aquarium. My Tank is 1/4" thick. What do you guys think? At what size do you have to worry about a mantis breaking a glass aquarium?

A full grown O. scyllarus would be capable of cracking glass but 99.999% of us here throw them in glass tanks anyway. The odds are rather low and nobody here really has seen it happen in person. Roy reports what species have been seen cracking glass but not really showing us any particular damage to his systems.. some of us have witnessed critter containers being broken but what do you expect from cheap plastic? Laying a sheet of acrylic on the bottom of the tank will prevent them from digging down but otherwise it's unnessecary.

My 30 gallon is acrylic and it is IMPOSSIBLE to clean.. urchins will scratch it.. heck a dry towel to wipe dripping water scratched the whole side of the tank! I use cotton balls for that now.. also cost of acrylic vs. glass.. you'll go broke.

Oh.. O. scyllarus needs around a 3 foot tank minimum btw.

I have kept my peacocks in glass. No problems. Dr. Roy said that in all his years of keeping them, there was only one incident of a peacock breaking the glass and it was the bottom tank glass from digging. All you need to do is put a sheet of acrylic on the bottom. After I put in a PVC burrow it never dug down in the sand again so in my last tank I didn't bother with the acrylic sheet.

Just don't tease it and make it hit the sides and you will be fine.

Ive been thinking of doing a all softy tank which id guess would be just fine with the mantis. Dont really see him bothering anything but just wanted to ask.
