9 times out of 10 it's a pistol shrimp that people are hearing.

If you know what rock it's in remove the rock and run some tapwater into it's hideout.

i seen it .the rock is 16 and half pounds on bottom in center of tank. are they bad?

There are different types of mantis shrimps. Some are spearers and some are smashers.

FWIW I don't consider any reef organism "good" or "bad".
They all have a purpose in the grand scheme of things.

I think this one is a smasher . I just heard about 4 or 5 click.

if you're concerned about it taking out something you should remove it.

Some will eat fishes and some will take snails/crabs etc.

How would a mantis just show up out of the blue? If its clicking wouldn't that be a pistol shrimp?

tank is only 4 months or so. with over 100 pounds of live rock

I dont think smashers are know to kill fish unless its in a really small tank, and they are really hungry. Dont quote me on that though I believe the only harm that will come from the mantis will be invertebrate casualties. Snails and hermits will be targets.
